What The "Do Nothing" Obama Has Accomplished That We Choose To Ignore Or Fail To Acknowledge

Again, even though this is a great blog, I have to say the best comes form the comment section: "Obama has [also] spent a minimum amount of time bragging about his accomplishments, a change of approach which in itself establishes another very important accomplishment. This administration's approach is beautiful and unique. Obama's efforts are focused on under-the-hood improvements that target the 'problems behind the problems'... getting more at the underlying deficiencies of our problems: the economy, the environment, international peace and personal security. His focus is on education, personal rights and freedoms, international relations, health, etc... Strengthening all these sets the stage for a very healthy and strong country and world. These are the tap roots of all our problems and it's the only real effective and intelligent approach. But it takes political confidence and insight to attack problems where they converge, deep at the roots, because the progress is slow at first and virtually invisible. It's an approach that takes a little faith and lots of wisdom to see and to initiate. Mark my words, in five years we're going to see progress on a deep and wide front as a result of this approach. Obama will get great bang for the buck going at it this way. It's how any complex problem or group of problems should be solved. This is the patient, extended-release, broad spectrum fertilizer we need. By contrast, the underlying philosophy of Obama's detractors is essentially that wealth is nature's solution for our every problem. It would be so cool if it were that simple, but nature doesn't run anything that way and neither should we. Barack is smart enough to understand that a thriving society needs health, food, shelter, education, freedom of expression, self reliance, art, etc, etc... That's a whole lot more than just money."

Russellville, Alabama School Prom Discrimination | American Civil Liberties Union

Jeez this is the deeeeeep south. What else do people expect? Since this girl lives there and goes to school there, if she has a brain and five active senses she must also be cognizant of the underlying prejudice there. The sticker and the prom date are two separate issues. People s/b/able to bring their date of choice to their Prom [no, a 16-yr-old shouldn't expect to be able to bring their 40-yr-old BF, but that's another issue altogether]. Remember the principal a couple of years ago in the same general geographic region who told the kids they couldn't bring dates of a different 'race' to Prom? Same old same old.

To address the second issue - I guess i am in the minority so far. I think wearing the "I Am A Lesbian" sticker in high school is pushing the envelope just a wee bit; there is no need to be combative about one's sexuality. People do judge by appearance, and from her picture I would say this girl looks like she wouldn't think twice about kicking the sht out someone who disagrees with her views [my opinion, sorry, but this is my comment after all]. Yes, you're here and you're queer [your slogan, not mine] and I love many of you on both sides of that equation, but I don't think sticking your genitals in society's face is a positive approach, particularly when you know that such actions will bring a negative response.

You have to choose your battles - and your arenas - carefully.

The old saying that you catch more flies with honey than vinegar will always be true. Live and learn. Knowing "Where" and "What" and "How" as it applies to the appropriateness of your protest is what separates the successful from the frustrated losers.

On Faith: The Empty Wager - Sam Harris

"Pascal's wager: if a believer is wrong about God, there is not much harm to him or to anyone else, and if he is right, he wins eternal happiness; if an atheist is wrong, however, he is destined for hell."

I've had a lot of firsthand experience with so-called conservatives, arch-conservatives and fundamentalists in my life. I may have grown up on the west coast, but my parents came from Minnesota and Texas, and those two families embodied all the negative energy one can possibly attribute to 'organized religion'.

It took me nearly 30 years to break free from these cults, but I did, and I have not looked back, not once. My epiphany? The 'god' all these people worship is egotistical, spiteful, murderous ... well, you can see where this is going. It's true, however - look around the world and see how people treat each other in 'His' name: there is enough evidence of god's malevolence that there should be no issue about it. The 'god' they promote, however, the one they market in order to suck people in, "loves you and all the little children".

About 20 years ago I decided that, if there really were a "God", and he/she/it were as loving and forgiving and groovy and omnipotent as these people insisted upon, it wouldn't make one twit of difference whether I believed in or worshiped at or gave money to or went to war for this entity. If there really were a 'heaven' I would go there, because in his/her/its infinite wisdom and luv, it wouldn't matter at all if I were a Christian/Muslim/Jew/whatever, or the most outspoken atheist on earth. I would still be rewarded for going through this life being a good person.

And if not? Over the last 9 years I have had two legitimate near-death experiences. Trust me - there is no "light", there are no "angels" and I never saw Jesus standing with his arms open wide to welcome me. There also were no Fires of Hell and I didn't see the Horned Guy with the long tail and pitchfork either.

I don't know what comes next and neither do you or the religionistas or even Richard Dawkins. But I do know I am here now, I have this life to live and that's what I am going to do as best I can.

Over 2,200 Vets Died for Lack of Health Insurance in 2008 - NAM

"Lack of health insurance claimed the lives of more than 2,266 veterans under the age of 65 last year, says a Harvard Medical School study out today.

That number is more than 14 times the number of deaths (155) suffered by U.S. troops in Afghanistan in 2008, and twice as many (911 as of Oct. 31) as have died since the war began in 2003."

THESE are the numbers the <del>fukwads</del> republicans don't want us to see. Most likely Lieberman doesn't want to publicize this either.
