Well to tell the truth, i think it is just some fancy word somebody came up with.A widget is nothing more than content or a tool provided by a third party. You can place widget codes into your website, desktop, blog or profile site, by simply use some HTML or java code that is provided.This is a handy way for people that don't understand coding but still want have cool things on their website, desktop blog or profile site.This is also the way for coders, webmasters and company's to promote their services. Most widgets will have a backlink to the orginal source. 



Webdevelopers: This is something that open a whole new market, now with all the profile sites like myspace & blogs, people will use the content , because they  can add content with a few clicks to their page.



This stuff can create good backlinks and free traffic (advertising) for your website or company.
