The Cartoon Controversy: Racism and Schoolroom Platitudes
What PISSES ME OFF
People like eternal verities, media soundbites, and trite sayings. It gives us a way of reducing the world, so big and so complex, to terms we can understand. We don't even need to understand it, we just come up with the right platitude and we are set. Who needs context or history when understanding comes prepackaged for our consumption?

The so-called cartoon controversy highlights this. However they dress it up for public consumption ("freedom of the Press," "toleration"), the Right thinks of this controversy in racial/religious terms--the uncivilized Ay-rab. This is obvious to all and doesn't need to be addressed. Even an idiot can see that when current US administration starts talking about freedom of the press, something is rotten. But what really frosts my shorts are those on the Left who are buying into this shit.

Leave the eternal verities to the Right. That's their game, and they will play you for suckers if you play it. They already are. Judgment should be the result of analysis and understanding, not vice versa.

What are the main verities being spouted by people who should know better?
"Freedom of the Press,"
"Religion is BAD," and
"Violence is BAD."

The Cartoon Controversy: Racism and Schoolroom Platitudes
Context
Europe has a very large immigrant Arab population--cheap exploitable labor, and lots of racial, cultural, and religious issues to keep it that way. Just like many immigrants groups in the US. It is a powder keg situation--remember France a couple of months back?

A second thing to consider (or perhaps remember) is that the Middle East, the heartland of Islam, is being undergoing the most brutal and blatant imperialist aggression since the 19th century. As oil becomes scarcer, these attacks will become more intense. Americans and their little lapdogs conquered Baghdad! Baghdad!! And Afghanistan. And now the gun-sights are slowly but surely shifting to Iran. For some extraordinary reason, this makes Muslims all over the world a tad uneasy. Hell, it makes me uneasy and I'm an atheist.

So then what happens next? Some pissant little right-wing rag in Denmark publishes a cold-blooded calculated slap in face to Muslims. These were racist cartoons. And when Muslims react, other newspapers in Europe line up with the racists, basically taking the opportunity to kick their unwanted immigrant populations in the face under the guise of "freedom of the press." So it's not just Denmark anymore, it's Europe. How on earth did you think Muslims were going to react given the circumstances?
