you know that feeling where someone is an asshole to you, you call them out on their asshole-ness, they deny it and claim it's all in your head, you decide to say "fuck you" and cut them out then find out at LEAST two other people you respect have since done the same thing and therefore justified that this person is, indeed, a giant asshole?

that's a good feeling.

i'm working at home today because we're moving office spaces and i have no phone, no internet and my entire office is in boxes and piles and i have massive deadlines this week.

i'm actually more productive for longer periods of time at home. no phone calls, no emails popping up unless i check. no one stopping in my office to chat, it's pretty good. i got to make a hot lunch without waiting for the stove or microwave, work in my fat pants instead of dress clothes and - best of all - was able to use my very own bathroom for my afternoon constitutional, complete with the newest issue of BUST magazine.

i could get used to this.

so the Handsome Man and i are thinking about going to mexico in january. now, i've been to mexico 3 times or so, and always have done the resort thing. i hate the resort thing. nothing makes me feel like more of an elitist snot than sipping my coco loco beside a literal line in the sand that the mexicans are not allowed to cross. but none of those trips have been my call.

the HM, bless his soul, is like me - a total Lonely Planet traveller. he, like me, loves mexican culture, mexican food and mexican people. now, some of my US relatives and some friends i've met from the US in particular cannot understand why canadians like mexico so much. some claim their disdain is because it's dirty (it's no dirtier than most emerging economies) or corrupt (see previous statement) or violent (um...look in the mirror. EVERYONE.) but most are just, to be honest, racist. blame it on living in a border town, blame it on all the illegal immigrants, whatever, it's basically just pure, ignorant, racism that would deter people from mexico. the country is much different than the issues seen in the US. but anyway, i'm digressing.

mexico is a beautiful country. the architecture and history are incredible, and many of the beaches are spectacular. when you venture away from the horridness that is cancun (aka Little America - where you can choose between McDonald's, Outback Steakhouse and Olive Garden and rip off artists), there are beautiful little spots where you can stay in a lovely bungalow for $40 a night and eat authentic mexican food for under $10 (FYI: you're just as likely to get food poisoning in those places as the Olive Garden in mexico). if you make an effort, you meet really fantastic people who love to show off their country. basically - if you don't act like a glutenous north american and stay within the confines of your 5-star all inclusive resort, you'd see it's a fantastic place to be.

so, i'm excited. it's always been my dream to experience mexico as an actual traveller, and to get to do it with such an awesome travel partner is even better.

now...to pay for it...ugh.

i've learned the thresholds of love.

i spent 3 hours last night watching UFC at a noisy pub full of men.

seeing some super fit men in tight shorts wasn't all bad, but smeared blood on the canvas fight floor sure was.

fuck that's savage stuff. and i can't drink because of stupid antibiotics so i was alert and aware of my surroundings at a time when i'd rather be wasted and passed out in the bathroom.

i had BIG PLANS of getting shit done this weekend. i got a bunch done when lo and behold, the Handsome Man surprised me with a weekend visit. so the rest didn't get done. although today, since it was crappy, we just hung out, i baked a cooking pumpkin i bought and made some delicious pumpkin millet muffins from the REBAR cookbook (buy it foodies. buy it now.) and some delicious butternut squash soup. and a loaf of bread. so, i guess i did manage to get stuff done, just had way more fun doing it. and i got the HM to scoop out my carving pumpkin, the job i hate most.

now i'm going to eat some soup and go see zombieland with my buddy iiiiiiiiiiian. i've heard good things, and i'll let you know.

--------

update: it was disgusting. and fantastic.

ok. so it's time i told you about my day with whogivesashirt.

when i went to toronto on my holiday, i had a day to just hang out, wander solo and see the sights. i mentioned this to shirty there, who said "no way, jose" and offered to be my tour guide.

let me tell you something. shirty is the best effing tour guide you could ever ask for. she came to ambo's house to pick me up, armed with a bus pass, some free museum passes and a ton of energy. we got yelled at by ambo's crazy neighbor lady upstairs, who was "recording something" and we were being too loud in the foyer. suck it, lady - your fucking monster child woke me up every day at 5:30 pushing chairs around and running back and forth and back and forth.

anyway, she wasn't hard to recognize, as any cartoon figure would be in toronto, so that was good. we jumped on the street car (which was exciting for me as ambo is anti-street car and i'd always wanted to ride one. really...it's just like a bus. on tracks.) and hopped off nearly immediately when shirty decided we'd wander through kensington market. i've been here to a bar or two but have never really looked around, so this was good times. we went into a sausage shop and got empanadas to munch on (aaaaaghhh droooooool i want one right now) and wandered around the streets. it's a good people watching place, that kensington.

anyhoo, we then found our way to the textiles museum - and let me tell you. shirty knows her shit when it comes to textiles. AND - we got in for free. i love getting things for free. we played around on the loom, i bought a spinning wheel pencil sharpener and we were on our way.

next stop: the University of Toronto. now - a lot of people wouldn't bother with touring a University but it was awesome. She knew her away around the coolest of buildings and had a ton of history/experience. we also hit the Rare Books library, where we peeked at some darwin books and a bunch of other ancient pages. it was awesome.

last stop: ice cream. i had the most fantastic lemon and double vanilla cream ice cream ever. they even had roasted marshmallow flavor. good times.

from there i bid adieu and walked back to ambo's house, my brain full, my feet tired and pretty happy. so i say - if you ever need a tour guide around TO, shirty's your gal.

i have no idea how to stumble without the tool bar.

"all men are potential rapists."

well well well - this was an article that caught my eye.

talk about a provocative subject. i don't agree, but i've said it before and i'll say it again - when nearly half of the women i know have been raped (mainly date-raped), and every man i know denies ever having done this, there's clearly a problem on what is perceived as "rape" (and...sorry guys...it's not usually on the woman's side) - unless a handful of dudes are out there doing a shitload of date-raping. we need to lay out a clear definition of what rape IS to the kids in our lives (i say kids because most of these women had this happen in their teens/early 20s by men of the same age): something tells me it's more of an ignorance-thing.

talk to the kids in your life about sex and respect for his/her partner. empower them to make good choices so these cycles stop being repeated.

go. now. shoo.

ok - i've had a nap so i can tell you more about my weekend.

this weekend was The Wedding - the one i was a bridesmaid in. now, this bride was the most non-bridezilla bride frickin' ever, always has been. you may or may not recall the dress saga, but the end result it that the maid of honor and i both ended up with great black dresses that we loved, we looked effing fantastic in and we'll totally wear again. i bought mine here, in black. it was NOT $98 then. i'm kind of sad i just saw this, makes me kind of want to barf. but whatever.

anyway, i paired it up with these:

they. were fucking tall. 4" to be exact.

then i bought some MAC lipstick in Russian Red and got me a 40s pin curl do.

so friday we had a spa day - i've never had a spa day. i'm not a real "pamper me" girl - but i could get used to it. so with a massage, red toes and red fingers we headed out to the wedding location - a fantastic equestrian ranch on the river - for rehearsal. i practiced in my heels and aeriated the lawn. i didn't care, i was going to fucking wear those shoes.

so the Handsome Man and i wake up saturday morning - to pouring rain. like, PISSING rain. it rarely rains here, and never like this. we grab coffees and he takes me out to the girls and checks into our room - which he upgrades to a king sized jacuzzi suite. good boy.

we end up having the wedding indoors, in this beautiful, small but intimate room, and given the grey skies and dramatic landscape - the pictures will be amazing. maybe i'll post one then. all i can say is the whole wedding party was so fun, the bride let us be as individual as we all are, and, i must say - we were a pretty damn good looking group.

the best part was walking down the aisle and catching the eye of the Handsome Man. honest to god - i think there was an electricity bolt that shot across the room the entire time.

for our first real, official and formal Couple Debut, he did an amazing job, considering he was dumped with 100 people he did not know. he sat with our older lady friends who told him today: "if you get rid of her, give us a call." and sought me out last night to tell me what a gorgeous, lovely man i have. i know. back off, bitches.

we danced it up until 2:30, the bride was still going hard at 3, and i have to say it was one of the most amazing, fantastic, romantic nights i have had ... maybe ever. the wedding was beautiful. everyone was awesome. and the Handsome Man thought i was the best part about the whole wedding.

can't get better than that.
