When Debra Bowen, California's secretary of state, sent Sacramento Bee columnist Stuart Leavenworth a friend request on Facebook, he was faced with a decision. If he accepted, would he have trouble keeping a professional distance from his source, or would he simply be trudging on the same trails reporters always have? Does becoming friends on social media sites change the reporter-source relationship?

Facebook developers are reporting 20-50% drops in their Application traffic due to an unannounced deprecation of the old apps.new.facebook.com URL by Facebook. Over the weekend, Facebook appears to have deprecated the apps.new.facebook.com domain, but some developers are reporting that users aren't recognizing the new domain, apps.facebook.com, causing the drop in traffic.

A message appeared from a top poster on the Facebook Developer Forums today which seems to indicate that beacon may be making a comeback. Facebook Developer, Tom Kincaid, noticed an interesting message when signing up for CBS Sportsline on Tuesday. After signing up, a popup appeared, mentioning, "CBSSports.com is sending this to your Facebook profile: Tom joined Free Fantasy Football - CBSSports.com on CBSSports.com Fantasy". It then gave him the option to close the popup, decline the message, or mention it wasn't him.

I've been mostly ignoring all the TechCrunch50 vs DEMO 2008 back and forth as they battle it out for the title of best startup launch conference. However, Scoble's post where he talked about his impressions of how they match up got me thinking. Since I'm an info and analysis junkie, I decided to spend a couple of hours the last two evenings to put together a quick, as objective as possible, shootout between the two to see how good they really are at selecting the best startups and acting as a launchpad for them.

I've cheered on Gen Yers as they've entered the workforce and admired their self-confidence and willingness to push back on authority. (I know two who have actually requested new bosses!)

I've also seen boomers, as well as my own generation, fumble their communications with Gen Y. There are plenty of differences between Gen X and Gen Y, and it often falls on boomers to help both groups navigate the workplace. So here's a guide for dealing with younger members of the team.

We hear about the big boys building these impossible-to-compete-with gargantuan datacenters that will suck in all of our data and we will all timeshare services from by looking at ads, and it sounds eerily like one of the most audacious mistakes ever made in the history of computing -- that only six computers (!) could power all the needs of the entire nation:
