She gave me good ideas. On the cliff. There was water
and the sun she was, standing on the cliff. Draped in the basic
white and black, that and her hair and invisible lashes.
She was a muse of sorts. She came through a screen like all
modern women. For a few hours she sustained this poem.

For five first cold ones, Henri had a hankerin'.
Then this ghost town rolled a flat,
thems & a fat one puffing in the yards
all night. To cower behind the bin hidden,
might his neighbor sneak & catch
hands & feet a guilty blue upon the shards.

--Mr. Nimh, they's bad for you. On your wrists
the irons slap, & grey your hair till dusty death.
--So be it white when they lo'er the urn,
tempted bold, Henri shall break the risks.
--There you go, Suh. Stubborn to the breath!
I'll cry you one, whence comes my turn.

Henri knows his faults, stinking fool he's not.
He shapes all with resentment, does his
bitterness know no bounds. Till one night this
gal struck a sound, his head and chest rang hot.
Moreover, willingness was worth both shots--
Henri palmed a smile and threw a kiss.

Twas windy, and so often was his top, screech-
-ing awful prose. The rose was white not red.
How much longer must his appetite go unfed?
Seems though none remained: the hunger of the leech.
A year or two or week was all Henri dared beseech,
while a crown of dust lingered upon his head.

Atop the spread & wilting, Henri odd all nights,
his face a heart flush full with that earthy glow,
two years to a draw, his shoulders & haze hung low,
as many too well offered: hers & a cupped delight.
Henri a spelled hound, howls all ears affright--
"the false face must hide what the false heart doth know."

Wickedness laid in & by, Henri's book was read
& stamped. Come where mornings pass him by & rush,
whelps out high the sun at crown, twitting like a thrush.
Onward now means downward? The nest then crackles red.
His white heart when duty's done, (pointing north) & said:
The sky & bird met there once & then fell hush.

Play on 36

The high ones cry, cry. They cry.You look up and
who's there?
--Easy, easy, Mr. Nimh, the rats are on your side.
They smell your grief.
--I sent my chiefs away, that and my hair
forever. With all them in line and again
they bite at me, and I have to give.

--Now there you exasperate me, Suh. We hafta cry.
A drop on the `nointed mask: Love & cry.
--Yeh; it shakes the sense.
And takes `em in between, when? What if I
toiling & stretching & bubbling, like white dye
dripping on the picket fence?

--No doubts you're just a dud. De voice is lost.
It's pyrite, I knocked it off my bat.
The girl & the boy
looked at each other. Their eyes were crossed,
& the cost of wounds from the hand, holds stat.
Anonymous poet's toy?

(Henri's being still abound.)

Henri wrote and it was bad. Twas
two in the morn hunched over, and spilling
hot tea, re tea all over the bed.
Henri clacked up a buffoon storm cuz
the rain kept coming. All the matter milling
in his head, wet, benches, wet.

--Life is a puff in between, or vice...
versa Henri was never too sure.
Murals peeled and dropped their leaves
square on his head. Henri did nice,
but complained daily for a cure
that's yet to come. He sat... and grieved.
