Crow's The Fare

the banquet hall
filled to capacity
as leader of the pack
rose, hand raised
to shhhsh the hungry hoard
in merriment

silence! be still
his eyes downcast before
raised now to greet
the squinting eyes
and saliva-glistened teeth
the ravenous jackals
at tables full, row upon row
before him stretched

up front, one brave male snapped
what this? where's the fallen meat
we're here to eat! No speech!
the alpha barked, teeth bared,
in earnest stared
down the fool who spake
then spoke in steady fashion:

it's not good, the news
you hear tonight
from bloodless lips
oft red and bright:
there's nothing to eat!
no carcass yet, no dead
no eat, the meat has fled

what, what, not dead!?
we'll not be fed!!
We've been misled
the howls rang out,
the snarls and growls
the yips, the yaps
hung tongues in doubt
slobber-dripped in dread

Not dead indeed, O alpha grey
what'll we eat, you say
then, this day?
How 'bout some hare?
Huh? Not on the menu!
It can't be in you
to say today
that crow's the fare?

Hmmm...well, okay
then make mine rare

Nothing focuses the mind more clearly than a false accusation, as it forces realization of the inferences that may be drawn from one's behavior, however innocent that behavior may in fact be. Also, it makes one starkly aware of the innocent who have been unjustly imprisoned by such accusations, and thankful that one - by grace - is not in their shoes.
