SpoonBot! Strange and often very funny musings on life, art, philosophy, and sundry other cultural detritus. Includes a gallery of paintings about robots. A recent post, for example, is "Classical Literature with Rational Actors," which turns Oedipus into a play that would--given the rational behavior of the agents--fit on a post card.

Wow. So many odd printed things with scroll work--scripophily! I particularly enjoyed reading about the Duchamp item with the adorable Duchamp soap-face. Clicking on the images provides healthy-sized images for more detail.

This is wonderful: a San Francisco Chronicle reader calls in to complain about an editorial oversight--and completely losing his composure. A one and a half minute audio file:
http://cdn.sfgate.com/blogs/sounds/sfgate/chroncast/2007/01/23/CorrectMe-001-2.mp3
On the one hand, he goes too far, but on the other hand, you feel for him. WARNING: he does refer to micturating in clear language, if that sort of thing upsets you.

I just watched "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" tonight, and it was exciting! An amazing film: you see the coup against Chavez from the inside, and also how so much of the success/failure of the coup depended on controlling the media. A particularly striking scene was seeing the Chavez supporters in the Presidential palace after it had been re-taken by the legitimately elected rulers, as they watched the mass media (and CNN) reporting that the dictator who staged the coup was still in complete control--these words being watched by the very people who had undone the coup from within the Presidential palace--the are living the truth that the lie they see on the news is trying to erase. The documentary fills a gaping whole in most US citizens' complete ignorance of Venezuela and Hugo Chavez. I should note that you can see the whole documentary for free on google video at http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=5832390545689805144

UPDATE (2007): Chavez seems to be getting more and more dictatorial of late--not a good sign. But he's got a good role model here in the US. (And it still doesn't erase the US-backed-coup in his country...)

This is almost overwhelming -- links to news articles, from a progressive slant, but also providing links to conservative websites and news; haven't had time to digest much of it but it looks amazing. Seems to have lots of information of the "follow the money" type -- who sponsors whom, which corporations are behind what. Am still not sure exactly where it's coming from, but hope to look into more along the way... (I still have to poke around enough to make sure it isn't a LaRouche site pretending to be progressive...!) If nothing else, it has links to many many news sources.

I visited their store in NYC years ago and it was amazing -- forget Proust's Madeleine! Each one brings back feelings, emotions -- it's strong. But I have gone back to the store and now it's gone. (I didn't know they were still active!) I wonder if they've moved to a new space?
