"The musical's title stems from a painting by Marc Chagall, one of many surreal paintings he created of Eastern European Jewish life, often including a fiddler. The Fiddler is a metaphor for survival, through tradition and joyfulness, in a life of uncertainty and imbalance."

I watched the local HS theatre production of this show last night. I think it's been twenty years (at least) since I saw the film. Watching it now as an adult, a parent, and through the eyes of life experience, it made me laugh, made me cry, but most of all, it made me appreciative of life....all of it.

A melancholy witch's call to entice or lure poor innocents into the dark side. At least, that is how Disney chose to include it in one of my all time favorite Halloween movies, Hocus Pocus. For years my little chickadee and I would snuggle together and enjoy some hot cocoa with marshmallows and watch this movie together. The first clip is the poem; the second is a rousing rendition of the classic: "I Put a Spell On You"...love Bette!
It all goes back to one Halloween party forty or so years ago when she brainstormed costumes for my sister and I. We were each to go as Cinderella, with one ingenious twist: Our costumes were Cinderella, before and after. My sister, blonde and blue eyed, was dressed as the "after" Cinderella, the one who had been transformed into a princess by the fairy godmother. My sister had a shiny tiara resting in her curls and wore a pretty party dress while home fashioned "glass" slippers adorned her feet.

I, brunette and pale child that I was, was awarded the role of the "before" Cinderella, the one who wore rags and had coal smeared on her face. To add insult to injury, my sister and I were bound together by a ribbon, so that everyone could see that we were costumed as a pair.

I did manage to salvage my self esteem somehow, and actually my mom called it right. I am soooo not a fairy princess, and I believe that time spent in ashes is character building. However, I do pull the story out from time to time to tease my mom a bit. I am still waiting for a chance to try on that glass slipper, though. **

**sarcasm, I think...maybe... :)
