A Well-Planned Retirement

Outside England 's Bristol Zoo there is a parking lot for 150 cars and 8 buses. For 25 years, its parking fees were managed by a very pleasant attendant. The fees were �1 for cars ($1..40), �5 for busses (about $7).

Then, one day, after 25 solid years of never missing a day of work, he just didn't show up; so the Zoo Management called the City Council and asked it to send them another parking agent.

The Council did some research and replied that the parking lot was the Zoo's own responsibility.

The Zoo advised the Council that the attendant was a City employee.

The City Council responded that the lot attendant had never been on the City payroll.

Meanwhile, sitting in his villa somewhere on the coast of Spain (or some such scenario), is a man who'd apparently had a ticket machine installed completely on his own; and then had simply begun to show up every day, commencing to collect and keep the parking fees, estimated at about $560 per day -- for 25 years.

Assuming 7 days a week, this amounts to just over $7 million dollars!

And no one even knows his name!

Just a quick note to let you know that Gordon Brown has today created a new department for climate change and energy, and Ed Miliband has been appointed its head.

This is, potentially, fantastic news. Until now, one department has been dealing with climate change and another - the department for business (DBERR) - with energy. This move could, at last, extract our energy policy from the interests of big business and mean we have hope for real, decisive action on climate change. While a lot remains to be seen about the structure of the new department, we now have a chance to influence Ed Miliband. He has the potential to bring fresh thinking to the substantial task of fixing the UK's renewable energy strategy - and he'll be a pivotal player in the government's decision on whether or not to allow a new coal-fired power station to go ahead at Kingsnorth in Kent.

A father passing by his son's bedroom, was astonished to see the bed
was nicely made, and that everything was picked up and tidy.

Mum and you.

I've been finding real passion with Stacy, and she is so nice, but I
knew you would not approve of her, because of all her piercings',
tattoos, her tight Motorcycle clothes, and because she is so much
older than I am.

But it's not only the passion, Dad. She's pregnant.
Stacy said that we will be very happy. She owns a trailer in the woods, and has a stack of firewood for the whole winter. We share a dream of having many more children.

Stacy has opened my eyes to the fact that marijuana doesn't, really
hurt anyone. We'll be growing it for ourselves, and trading it with
the other people in the commune, for all the cocaine and
ecstasy we want.

In the meantime, we'll pray that science will find a cure for AIDS, so
Stacy can get better. She sure deserves it!

Don't worry Dad, I'm 15, and I know how to take care of myself.
Someday, I'm sure we'll be back to visit, so you can get to know
your many grandchildren.

Anthony Nolan Trust.

I have returned some days ago from donating my stem cells via dialysis. I thought it would be best to let the dust settle and think about what I have done and been through.

I can say in all honesty that the process did involve some minor discomfort. The injections given did produce the side affects I was expecting some bone ache, headaches and general fatigue. However this was only over a four day period and the donating process was really quite easy. Compared to the recipient who would have extensive Kemo to suppress their immune system it remains a very small price to pay for giving someone hope of remission and hopefully a full recovery.
I would also like to add my thanks to the trust for all the efforts to make this a stress free process both emotionally and financially, the hotel was great and I could not fault my treatment.
