"What drives these Americans to risk their lives against Israeli soldiers on behalf of a subject people half the world away? The answer is a passion for justice, and a commitment to civil rights. Why should any of this be of interest to Americans? For a general reason and a particular one. The general: this is a passion and a commitment that we Americans at our best have been supposed to share; it is the largest single reason we have received the admiration of other people around the world. The particular reason is as obvious but more immediate. Barack Obama, our first black president, and a man who has identified himself as a beneficiary and successor of the tradition of Martin Luther King, has promised $30 billion of military aid to Israel over the next ten years -- with no conditions, no budget-items specified, no limitations spoken of. Barack Obama is known to be a moderate politician, and so we may deduce that the moderate plan, with Israel, is to keep increasing the leviathan-bulk of the American subsidy and not to ask questions."

"Reporting from San Francisco -- After a Lutheran school expelled two 16-year-old girls for having "a bond of intimacy" that was "characteristic of a lesbian relationship," the girls sued, contending the school had violated a state anti-discrimination law.

In response to that suit, an appeals court decided this week that the private religious school was not a business and therefore did not have to comply with a state law that prohibits businesses from discriminating. A lawyer for the girls said Tuesday that he would ask the California Supreme Court to overturn the unanimous ruling by a three-judge panel of the 4th District Court of Appeal."

there's a photograph on myspace of them hugging. so, i mean, yeah... of course they're lesbians. and we all know lesbians are sinners undeserving of an education.

Old Turbines Get a Second Wind Through Remanufacturing - Green Inc. Blog - NYTimes.com

"A new turbine runs in the range of $1,400 to $1,600 per kilowatt of generating capacity, which translates to at least $1.4 million for a 1 megawatt turbine, said Mr. Stein. Nexion sells remanufactured 25-kilowatt to 500-kilowatt turbines for about $700 to $800 per kilowatt. Their customers also only wait about two months for a rebuilt machine, compared to the year-long - or more - waiting lists for new turbines.

If a turbine is properly rebuilt, every part from the 80- to 100-foot tower to the blades can be restored to last another 20 years, said Mr. Stein. The gear box, a refrigerator-sized tangle of moving steel parts, is "the heart of the turbine" and the most critical piece to rebuild, he said, because of the amount of wear and tear it endures spinning 1,000 revolutions a minute for years on end. "
