The choice of Rick Warren to give the Inaugural Invocation was seen by many as an afront to homosexuals and a betrayal of Obama's principles. Of course, atheists would argue that invoking supernatural beings at the Presidential Inauguration is silly outmoded superstition and a violation of First Amendment principles. Instead I present you with an alternative, humanist, invocation.

Accidental Blogger: Carnival of the Liberals # 82: The New Year Edition

At this time, this year, liberals are in a mental flux. The curtain is about to come down on the eight nightmarish years of Bush-Cheney - surely a time to rejoice. A new guard is poised to take over but the fate of liberalism under the coming administration is uncertain. Therefore it's premature to celebrate too exuberantly. The economy has gone Humpty Dumpty, wars are raging and people are nervous. After a bruising Democratic primary and a nasty general election campaign, I am not surprised that the minutiae of domestic politics are not on the minds of many bloggers. They are probably exhausted and are in a "wait and see" mode. The majority of the posts featured here dwell on broad liberal issues, mostly independent of who is in power. A couple of bloggers have a bit of fun with fantasy and one presents us with a slice of political history.

From the page: "Just because you can't imbibe in the middle of the day doesn't mean your crustacean friends can't. It's a little known fact that shrimp love their rum. It makes them happy little decapods, and if you make this recipe you'll be happy too. It's simple enough that you can make it for lunch with no trouble at all, especially if you do the marinade the night before. It might seem a little steppy for a midday meal, but it all goes together very quickly and took me just about a half hour total. The taste, texture and wonderful aroma will beat the pants off a sandwich and chips any day."
