A Cool Fall Night

In the darkness of night,
a cool breeze issues in the fall.
When midnight shadows obsure all sight,
and the trees grow black and tall.
When the animals sleep and curl up tight,
the cloud shrouded moon forms a blurry ball.

A wood smoked fire lingers thinly in the air,
a light hickory scent the only tell tale sign.
The early morning dew weighs on the grass like fine frosted hair,
sharp wet blades protrude to form the hill line.
The fox in the vale comes out to play without a care,
A field mouse his quarry this eve he chooses to dine.

The warm days of summer are over and the harvest is brought in,
and so the seasons come to change yet once again.

"Quotable quotes - all original"
Category: Life

Some are old and some are new, but they're all original. I said it first....at least I think I did:

1 Have you seen scrap metal prices lately!? I'm going to have to go home and update my list of people that aren't worth the lead it would take to shoot them!

2 Like a catfish in a canary bowl!

3 Humility is a lesson learned on the water -while being out-fished by a seven year old girl and her trusty "Barbie" pole.

4 When playing uecher, the Jack of Hearts does a whole fat lot of good when your buddy makes it spades based on the three nines he's holding in his hand.

5 You can lead a cow to water - but they'll probably just turn around and poop in it.

6 Social security is pretty much nothing more than a death tax. When the government instituted it, they were hoping most of us would die before we ever made it to 65.

Top 10 road rage inducing driving hazards in Southern Indiana
An original top ten list by Curt

10	The Field Gawker
This is most likely an old man in a pickup truck. In the city you would call them rubber neckers - those people that stop and gawk at accidents. In the county you may often come upon them or be driving behind them when they just suddenly stop in the middle of the road for no apparent reason. Most likely it is a farmer out checking to see how his beans are growing and even though you may have to get to work, he is already on the job, and totally oblivious that you are even behind him. My dad is definitely one of these.

9	Good Fellas
Similar in hazard level to the field gawker, good fellas are encountered whenever two good ol boys that know each other happen to be traveling in opposite directions on the same road and decide to stop and have a chat thus blocking both lanes of travel. If one of them has a boat in tow it's going to be a while. He is going to have a fish story or two to tell and his buddy isn't going to buy any of it until he gets out and pulls something big out of the live well to prove it. I've been guilty of this one myself a time or two so don't judge them too hard.

8	I gotta stop before I lose my signal
Cell phone drivers in the city can be a hazard. Out in the country it gets a little worse because you just know they are going to lose their signal over the next hill. Be prepared for a sudden stop.

7	The Truck Hunter
These are mostly seasonal, though the hard core ones hunt year round (hunting season be damned). They are usually easy to recognize - The 35 inch Super Swamper tires and the camouflage paint scheme gives them away every time. Just pray a deer doesn't run within line of sight between you and them or you're going to lose a radiator. If you happen to drive anything remotely resembling a law enforcement or conservation officer's vehicle they usually won't bother you though.

6	The Minivan
You know which one I'm talking about. Dust sketches on the back window, favorite NASCAR driver sticker on the left, all the kids' sports accomplishment stickers on the right, and one sticker to support the kid who chose academics over athletics somewhere. She's talking on the phone (how the heck do they get a signal out here anyhow?), screaming at the kids, and trying to eat a Nutri-grain bar all at the same time. She's 10 minutes late for soccer practice and it's all your fault because you just happened to get out on the road in front of her!

5	Slow Turners
They're mildly annoying in town, deadly dangerous on the highway before you get home. These folks have an adverse reaction to pulling anything in their car over 0.003 g's. That's right, they are doing 55mph and they are going to turn right ahead of you and not use the turn signal. Not only that - they will come to a complete stop before doing so and then proceed to turn into their driveway or side road at the rate of 5mph. An even more dangerous variant is the slow wide turner. These are the ones that not only come to a complete stop but also find it necessary to swerve into the oncoming lane of traffic before completing the turn. You're driving a Buick for goodness sake not a semi tractor trailer!

4	The Country Drunk
We all have one in our neighborhood and we all know who it is. If you happen to be driving in to town and see him parked out in front of the bar - use extreme caution on your way home even if it's before noon because someone's going to lose a mailbox on the way home and you sure don't want to be in front of him in your car. You definitely want to keep the kids out of the front yard until he's already gone past.

3	The Mail Checker
These are usually encountered on the way home from work. Their mailbox is right on the road, they live on the other side of the crest of a hill and they are just to lazy to pull in the actual driveway and get out to check the mail - they are going to be stopped right in the middle of the road. At least the actual mailman has flashing lights and a caution sticker on his bumper.

2	Jeff Gordon
These are worse than the minivan; they have a 24 sticker on the window and actually happen to be driving the stock version of the NASCAR's that race on Sundays. 2 lanes merging into one up ahead - it's going to be a green and white checkered finish. No racing below the yellow line? - You might as well forget double yellow lines for that matter.

1	Demolition Derby Man
Yeah it's that time of year again. The neighbors are getting a car ready for the derby and they just gotta test it out before the big show. Un-licensed, un-insured, and it's gonna be a gaudy painted boat from the 1970's. If you hear him yell out the window "Hey Jeff-ro did yall get that leaky brake wheel cylinder fixed yet?" - Just duck and cover because all's fair game but the driver's side door.

I wrote these both in the fall of 1997 when I was in my first year of college. I just found them tonight in an old notebook that I had been looking for for quite a while.

Goodnight Candlight

Tonight I write by candle light,
12:19 AM and all is well.
Rich is sound and dim is sight,
as the candle flickers with aromatic smell.
Stars shine through in my skylight,
as in my cozy abode I dwell.

Sweet is the smell of cinnamon that permeates the air,
cool is the night breeze that through the window blows.
So thick and cozy are the blankets that I wear,
as the candle ever dimmer continually grows.
So rest must come as we give up our worry and care,
As new day is born and the old one comes to a close.

So goodnight and farewell my dear friends since my candle has ceased to burn,
And at a new dawn I will awake and tomorrow I shall return.

The Woods at Night:

What is it about the woods at night,
that I truly hold so close and dear.
To some it gives such terror and fright,
but I love the call of the wild that I hear.
Perhaps some fear for the lack of light,
but my senses tell me no danger is near.

Over yonder I hear the hoot of the owl,
as shadows grow tall and light goes dim.
And the lonesome coyote begins to howl,
as the moonlight pops out behind a tree's limb.
Then a disturbed raccoon gives a shrewd little growl,
but the woods are full of only nature, nothing evil or grim.

Oh what a joy through the woods to walk,
in the middle of the night when the animals talk.
