From the page: "According to the report, much of the world has long been ruled by an unhealthy fixation on swelling the gross domestic product, or the quantity of goods and services the economy produces. With a singular obsession on making G.D.P. bigger, many societies â€" not least, the United States â€" failed to factor in the social costs of joblessness and the public health impacts of environmental degradation. They allowed banks to borrow and bet unfathomable amounts of money, juicing the present by mortgaging the future, thus laying the ground for the worst financial crisis since the 1930s."

Craig Murray - Another Old Etonian Wanker Calls Me a Liar

From the page: "Rory Stewart is getting the hang of being a Conservative politician; he has plainly learned that the first requirement is to lie through your teeth. Form today's Independent on Sunday:

Once tutor to Princes William and Harry, Rory Stewart, in his latest incarnation as Conservative prospective candidate for Penrith, has found himself the unlikely subject of intrigue. Craig Murray, renegade former ambassador to Uzbekistan, claims in his blog that Stewart worked as an MI6 officer in Afghanistan. While it's true Stewart was educated at Eton, received training from the British armed forces, and has yet to marry, the comparisons with James Bond appear to end there. "I've never met Craig Murray and I have no idea why he is saying this," he tells me when I call, "It's not just false but extremely dangerous. I've been doing charity work in countries where people are already at risk and his claims will only endanger them further." Stewart's father is even more succinct: "It's bollocks.""

Bollocks indeed!
That final paragraph about "doing charity work in countries" is so much of a give away. The guy refutes being a MI6 spy, but tells you to shut up anyway due to the possible endangerment of some vague recipients of charity in a foreigner land. Oh and his dad reckons its bollocks too. As if a spy tells his dad what he's up too.

From the page: "The Transition Whidbey Initiative is clearly promoting a broad and far reaching set of solutions to peak oilâ€"from community mapping of local food initiatives to reskilling initiatives to local currency to promoting renewable energy. When these folks talk about being "inspired by peak oil", I don't see the "casual eagerness for the death of others" that Steffen referenced, but rather a recognition that life is going to change anyway, so we had better plan how we want that change to happen. And crucially, the group is interacting with the political systems it inhabitsâ€"which is a vital part of moving beyond personal action to real cultural change."

The terrorists had been dressed in Army uniforms. There were also attacks on police installations in Peshawar and Lahore, and, once the offensive began, an Army general was shot dead by gunmen on motorcycles on the streets of Islamabad, the capital. The assassins clearly had advance knowledge of the generalâ€s route, indicating that they had contacts and allies inside the security forces.

Pakistan has been a nuclear power for two decades, and has an estimated eighty to a hundred warheads, scattered in facilities around the country. The success of the latest attacks raised an obvious question: Are the bombs safe?
