Leaving their textbooks to gather dust, Houston middle school teacher Ardath A. Stewart and her students studied science last spring by assembling much of their curriculum on a class "wiki," an open-source community Web site. The materials included students' written postings on class topics, as well as projects, grading rubrics, and discussion questions that Stewart prepared or obtained from teachers in other parts of Texas and the United States.

The Texas teacher is part of a small but growing movement of K-12 educators that is latching on to educational resources that are "open," or free for others to use, change, and republish on Web sites that promote sharing. The open-content movement is fueled partly by digital-creation tools that make it easy to create "mash-ups," or digital medleys of content of various types.

Educators and education-oriented groups advocating open content say it saves schools money by spreading the time and expense of developing curricular resources over many contributors.

With the annual podcast awards coming up, I've been browsing through a lot of different website sources for podcasts, and I wanted to share a little bit of information with the autodidacts out there who haven't yet been introduced to the wonders of open course and the many varieties of educational podcasts.

We're living in an age where superior learning is no longer constrained by circumstances of finance, connections, and location. Ivy League schools like Yale and MIT release several course materials, including reading lists, video lectures, podcasts, assignments, exams, and pdf texts, for hundreds of courses absolutely free. If you're an independent learner like me, you could conceivably receive nearly the quality of education from attending these classes as you can from distance learning with the purchase of the accompanying text. If you're someone who experiences learning as more of an interactive, social process, you will receive admittedly less benefit, but still might find value in the lectures, which can be paused, rewound, and re-watched, unlike the typical college lecture.
