Friends, it's not often that I burn a few SU goodwill exchange units in order to ask a favor, but this is a very worthy cause. Please see the World's Most Dangerous Idea for details and as always, thank you for the endless inspiration and guidance. Onward ...

Sticky Post

10/17/2007 UPDATE -- Well, having since migrated to a new laptop and having not gone through the hoops to reinstall Greasemonkey and other various monkeying around; this previous fix alas reveals itself as unsustainable for my own uses. With great respect and thanks for thlayli's work, I must nevertheless move on, from here. All the best, my friends. - ms
-----------------------------------------------------------------
11/30/06 UPDATE -- Persistence may pay off, yet! If this continues to stick, it may finally be fixed. Woohoo. Please scroll down for newest stumbles, thanks for stopping by!
-----------------------------------------------------------------
11/27/06 UPDATE -- Sigh. Thought this was finally working after a script reinstall, but alas, this is my backed up post, pasted here as evidence that I took thlayli's warnings to backup, seriously. :)
-----------------------------------------------------------------
10/2/06 UPDATE (beta testing in progress)-- Since I first wrote this post (around July 2006, I believe), diligent stumbler thlayli has gone and written a greasemonkey script called Sticky Helper beta. Presently, it's not yet working on my particular setup, but it is working GREAT for the majority of people that I've informally polled.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
10/1/06 UPDATE -- An example of what one gets for meddlin' too much. :) I posted this item months ago (July, I think), but in playing around with the Sticky Helper beta tool, I've now permanantly lost the ORIGINAL date, which I might have preferred for posterity's sake. So perhaps a case in point ... SU might not do everything that we THINK it should do, but there may be people who have thought things through a little more thoroughly in order to insure that SU always does what it OUGHT should do! Sometimes, perhaps it's the boundaries that define the canvas so that we can stay sufficiently focused to actually create something useful or at least interesting. :)

Original post:
-----------------------------------------------------------------
You're only as good as your last stumble. I've noticed that some Front Page stumbles have been better at encouraging visitors to dig a little deeper than others. The current front page assortment seems not as compelling as earlier assortments. I don't want to ever fall into a rut of never giving other stumblers a THUMBS UP, merely to keep my Front Page jazzier; but in terms of engaging visitors, these entries don't seem to be nearly as compelling or effective. If you ask me, that's a little counter-intuitive; but then, Human Nature is about as counter-intuitive as anything in the natural world.

That said, I wonder whether there is there a way to re-order our stumbles but keep original date intact? Or if such a capability would even be desirable? Is part of stumbling the fact that we're always only as good as our last stumbles? Is that part of what keeps us exploring, digging, stretching to find those Ultimate Stumbles?

We can artificially re-order by manipulating the date stamp, but that somehow doesn't feel satisfying. Part of the Stumbler Personality Disorder is having stumbled some stuff before other stumblers; kind of like the Slashdot "First Post" disorder suffered by that population. So, pulling stuff up to the front page by changing the date doesn't satisfy this relentlessly self-centered, base, ugly compulsion; which in my case, is a big reason for stumbling in the first place. What are your thoughts?

Aerogel is the lightest and lowest-density solid known to exist. It is typically 50-99.5% air, yet can hold (theoretically) 500 to 4,000 times its weight in applied force.
