Quanzhou Marionette Theater, from China,Wednesday at Zankel Hall, part of Ancient Paths, Modern Voices.
"The 10 impressive puppeteers in the Quanzhou ensemble are also compelling singers. As they worked their puppets, they chanted Chinese tunes and songs, which sometimes spin in complex cyclic patterns, and spoke their dialogue in a singsong style that was hauntingly musical."

Brett Grunig, The Curtain of Morning, Watercolor

Omens, when they appear, are seen and interpreted in different ways, generating different reactions and different stories for each viewer. The work in this show is about the development of meaning in fragmentary narrative imagery. The narratives themselves are not fully explored in favor of exploration of a single, symbolic symbol for the whole. By not spelling out each narrative and by choosing cryptic moments or surreal depictions of a narrative I am trying to invite the viewer to generate his or her own personal narrative for each image. -BG

Brett is currently exhibiting in our Gallery in the Meadows Library. More of his work seen here http://www.brettgrunig.com

Leonardo Erlich,Swimming Pool, Installation at P.S.1

Leandro Erlich is known for installations that seem to defy the basic laws of physics and befuddle the viewer, who is introduced into jarring environments that momentarily threaten a sense of balance or space.
When approached from the first floor, visitors are confronted with a surreal scene: people, fully clothed, can be seen standing, walking, and breathing beneath the surface of the water. -Alanna Heiss

More of Erlich's work is found here http://www.leandroerlich.com.ar/works.php?id=25

Pipilotti Rist's "Pour Your Body Out" installation. MoMA's second-floor atrium.

Ms. Rist, who emerged as a video whiz in the 1990s, has dealt with intimidating architectural spaces before. As the Swiss representative to the 2005 Venice Biennial, she projected video on the ceiling of the San Stae church. There, as at the Modern, visitors could take their shoes off and rest on plush artist-designed sofas.

Visually "Pour Your Body Out" is a kind of vanitas -- a still life symbolizing the transience of earthly pleasures -- set in motion. The camera lingers on ripe apples, luscious strawberries and fields of trembling tulips; fruits are smashed and petals are crushed, plucked and bitten. Fields of flowers, shot from ground level and projected 25 feet high, create a disorienting, Wizard of Oz sensation. -NYT
Michael Wohlgemut,(1434/37-1519) 'Dance of Death'. Pen and black ink.

Michael Wohlgemut and his stepson Wilhelm Pleydenwurff ran one of Nuremberg's best-known workshops, producing woodcuts, altars and sculptures. Their workshop quickly specialized in the new art of book illustration, employing draftsmen who transferred the design of the artist onto the woodblock, and cutters who then carved the block with a hollow stylus. From 30 November 1486 to 1 December 1489 Albrecht Dürer trained in their workshop.
