This is one of a series of works that I just hung in the gallery of the college that I teach at. More info to come.

Justin Banger, Martyrdom, oil on Canvas.

My work explores the paradoxical tension between the metaphoric and the literal. The banana is an image that has been helpful in my exploration of this tension. It fights its way through my imagery, taking on subtly different roles of humor and violence that expose how nostalgic literalizing of the Garden of Eden and indoctrinated fear of the end of days can make us forget that life takes place right now. In technique, I strive for well-drawn, representational forms, which are grouped in unusual compositional situations to distort the overall connotation of the image and provide an unsettling narrative. I hope to give well-worn symbols new life in the context of my personal work. It is my hope, when viewers encounter my work and take in the juxtaposition of symbolic elements, that they draw associations from previous and traditional uses of the individual symbols while trying to come to terms with their implementation in my work. - Justin Banger
