Nearly everyone fails to use science in washing clothes and thus do it badly, wasting energy. Most laundry machines cannot calculate wash time from temperature to give enzymes enough time to work, or even let humans manually set sufficient soak intervals. They might mix bleach into the wash too early, killing the enzymes. They might use water too cold.

This short report introduces some science and technology behind enzymes in detergents, a multi-billion dollar global industry with enormous consequences for energy use and water pollution.
