Standard Reference Method - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Standard Reference Method or SRM is a system modern brewers use to measure color intensity, roughly darkness, of a beer or malted grain. This method involves the use of spectrophotometry to assign a number of degrees SRM to light intensity.

The SRM number is defined as 10 times the absorbance of a sample at 430 nanometers measured through a .5-inch cell. The 430-nanometer wavelength corresponds to a deep blue light, and is the wavelength at which beers appear most different from each other.

The standard was adopted in 1950 by the American Society of Brewing Chemists as an objective measurement of color unburdened by the difficulties of the Lovibond system; the measurement of the color of a beer in degrees SRM and degrees Lovibond are approximately equal and in practice can be used interchangeably to evaluate the color of intensity of beer.

How To Brew Your First Beer

These instructions are designed for the first-time Brewer. What follows can be considered an annotated recipe for a fool-proof Ale beer. Why an Ale beer? Because Ales are the simplest to brew. Brewing Beer is simple and complicated, easy and hard. Compare it to fishing - Sit on the end of the dock with a can of worms and a cane pole and you will catch fish. Going after a specific kind of fish is when fishing gets complicated. Brewing the specific kind of beer you want is the same thing. There are many different styles of beer and many techniques to brew them.

Original gravity (OG) usually refers to the density of wort, unfermented beer, usually expressed as a ratio to the density of water (thus for instance 1.050, occasionally expressed 1050). The density is closely related to the amount of fermentable sugar dissolved in the wort, and thus predicts the likely strength of the finished beer.
