My relationship with issues of sustainability began with the David Attenborough book and series `Life On Earth'. It was here that my interests in nature and the outdoors became more conscious of the future of the planet. I'd already searched fossils from the ground, and watched as ants moved home when I removed a paving slabs exposing their domain, but now I thought about extinctions.
My connections with Ghana also made me aware that there are many ways to live, and I also gained a respect for alternative (especially in the context of 80's Britain) lifestyles and relationships to the environment. The cold war was still in full throws, and I remember having to watch programmes about nuclear war, and how to survive one!!! 4 minute warning, a terrible concept- potential. Famine in Ethiopia. Live aid. The contradictions and stupidities of the world I was growing up in were obvious.
I was a member of the Berks' Bucks' and Oxon natural trust, junior branch, where I spent Saturdays planting trees and protecting saplings from rabbit attack. I enjoyed helping survey birds and butterflies. I helped dig a pond with the reasoning of helping the great crested newt populations, which were in decline. I was also a member of the cubs and scouts were I gained my love of camping, camp craft and adventure.
On completion of my science A'levels I entered Manchester Metropolitan University to study the combined honours degree of Biology and Environmental Studies. These are my foundations. From here over the years I have maintained my interests and furthered my knowledge in various aspects of the connectedness of peoples and working for a better future.
I helped set up and run a young naturalists club at the then Parrs Wood Rural Centre. I also did some travelling in India where I gained an ever greater insight into the inequalities of societies than I had gained visiting family in Ghana.
I got a scholarship to Manchester university to train as a counsellor. These skills influenced me into working with school non-attenders, where I was responsible for the running and development of the young peoples resource. My role developed into the outdoor education and personal development aspects of our young person led curriculum. Sustainability of lifestyles through developing a relationship to the environment was important to me whilst developing delivery. Having the young people enjoy and be challenged by the outdoors was a part of providing the space for many movements in personal development.
Sustainable living has many facets all centred about the individual within a community. All of our well being is in consideration when focused on one. Helping communities be `healthy' is of benefit to us all whether it be reducing the risk of exclusion of some, or better meeting the combined needs of securing a future for our children's children.
