Castlerigg Stone Circle - Cumbria, England, photo by Bill Lockhart

Castlerigg Stone Circle consists of 38 stones of variable sizes and shapes; they are all un-hewn boulders, some standing over 5 feet in height, although some have fallen in the 5000 years since their erection. It has been estimated there were originally around 41 stones, so Castlerigg is relatively well preserved when compared with other circles in the British Isles. The stone circle has been tenuously dated at 3200BC, although there is always a buffer zone of a couple of hundred years when trying to date stone circles without accompanying archaeology. More...

Newgrange Megalithic Passage Tomb, Ireland - World Heritage Site

The Tri-Spiral design engraved on one of the stones inside the chamber of Newgrange is probably the most famous Irish Megalithic symbol. It is often referred to as a Celtic design, but it was carved at least 2500 years before the Celts reached Ireland. At 12 inches in diameter the tri-spiral design is relatively small in size, less than one-third the size of the tri-spiral design on the entrance stone.

Where Halloween began - The Hill of Ward, Ireland

Tlachtga was the location of the Great Fire Festival which took place on eve of the 1st November. With the coming of Christianity the festival was incorporated into the Christian calendar as a time of remembrance for the holy souls. The customs of Samhain that didn't fit into Christianity survived as Halloween. More...

Easter Island, the mystery of the Stone Giants

Easter Island is one of the most isolated islands in the world but 1200 years ago a double-hulled canoe filled with seafarers from a distant culture landed upon its shores. Over the centuries that followed a remarkable society developed in isolation on the island. For reasons still unknown they began carving giant statues out of volcanic rock. These monuments, known, as "moai" are some of the most incredible ancient relics ever discovered.

Without a doubt, the Irish countryside is one of the toughest subjects in the world to photograph. On one hand, it is so incredibly green and delightful that, unless you are especially careful, you risk your photos looking like postcards. On the other hand, Ireland is literally a tough assignment -- the unpredictable light, the incessant winds, and the ever-present rain. J Michael Sullivan
Cut into rock at Wadi Matkandush 5,000 years ago, before the rains ceased and the Fezzan turned arid, sparring wildcats may have evoked the powers of fierce carnivores for humans who hunted here.
