A savvy and forward-looking expose of the current economic pain by Noreena Hertz. A must-read: "The dominant economic theory of the past 20 years, a theory that put liberty before equity, gave markets more power than states and saw risk as a public good that shouldn't be restrained, is defunct..."

Practice Generosity: Generosity is one of the 10 paramitas, or enlightened qualities, that Buddhists try to cultivate; it is a core virtue extolled in every spiritual and religious tradition. It may also be the one virtue that most of us believe we possess. The department store's Christmas tag line "Everyone has a gift to give!" is not only a brilliant marketing ploy but also a reflection of our need to believe that in a pinch, we'd choose to offer rather than grasp.

NASA's Orbiting Carbon Observatory has arrived at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California where it will launch in January 2009. The observatory is NASA's first spacecraft designed to study carbon dioxide.

The spacecraft will spend two years in a 438-mile, near-polar, sun-synchronous orbit. It will map the globe every 16 days and collect information about levels of CO2 in the Earth's atmosphere.
