I have felt lately that the Gaza tragedy is fracturing friendships. But unlike many issues of economics & politics, I feel that we are not getting access to good accurate honest unbiased comment.

This is one case where I don't know. I read one article and am convinced one way, read another & am convinced both are to blame.

But I do know this. Much of what is being written is extremely partisan propoaganda. And some eyewitness truth without an agenda would be useful in seeing what is really happening.

In these cases I look for wrongs.
1. It is wrong for military uses weapons designed to inflict maximum harm on civilian populations. Shrapnel mines & cluster bombs or bomblets are wrong. And should be banned from any urban conflict.
2. All children are created equal, before politics & bias. Childrens lives are not exchangeable.
3, The fact Hamas rockets kill Israeli children is NOT a justification to kill Palestinian children.
4. It is hard to define combatants when it is not a uniformed conflict, and people are sometimes suicide bombers and targets civilians. Therefore, now applying benchmarks of the now rare actual armed soldier conflicts is hard.
5. But WHY would anyone blow hemselves up unless the conditions they had to live under were so bad that it was better for their family that they were dead?
6. Both home populations are being drip-fed propaganda as are Americans and Western media (whoever's side they are on).

I would observe, Wars have the propaganda reason they exist. And the real reason (often resources/territory, power, access to resources). Religion is just the excuse. It's always about resources, power, access.

But I understand these things, and I would observe this. Isarael is responsible in the end, because the bigger guy in the room, the more powerful should always be responsible. They do not need to give bread from their mouth, but with power comes responsibility.

If Israel wants to be taken seriously as a nation, it needs to think less of propaganda and be more open to European & America voices. This I think is impossible.

So all I do know is children are innocent. Innocent children dying is wrong, and simply builds generations of hatred.

Maybe some politcal forces want that, if so, talk of an end to the conflict is all an elaborate farce.

I don't know any more about it. But I am tired of people shoving a view down my throat, and threatening a friendship, if I choose not to take a side, because I simply DO NOT understand it.

Of course, I have a lot of opinions, but only take an opinion once I understand the gamut of arguments, and can see an emerging truth. Propaganda & distortions bury informed arguments. I also reverse my opinion when wrong.

But this situation is too complex than merely to take a position, because I have friends who strongly believe in BOTH sides.

In the end, until you understand the truth (and there always is a truth), you cannot see the light.

Hi All,

It's thundering here. Today was the first proper rain in months. I'm in Melbourne, no overseas trip planned this Christmas.

Normally, I write in my blog at http://www.2thinknow.com/innovation which is about global positive change in areas like the environment, consumerism, economics and politics.

But as I am rather uninspired, bored and procrastinating on some work I am writing here! Anyway, if anyone drops me an email through SU I am happy to email back, as it is all rather boring. I'm kind of making decisions about 2008 at current, and thinking.

Anyway, Merry Christmas to all of you in countries who celebrate Christmas like me, may your families be fun and may you steer clear of being "down". And happy New Year all around the world!

He is until 11pm the PM of Australia.

There is an election today, I believe Rudd will win with 52-54% of the vote, perhaps by around 17 seats majority.
