http://www.naomiklein.org/articles/2008/12/cant-lose-this-moment
Kim Elliott: As you outline so well in your book and in various interviews in the U.S. media, the current financial crisis holds the possibility of being one of those moments when the shock doctrine can best be applied. Can you comment on both the Harper government's economic and fiscal statement introduced last week, and on the Opposition's response to that - that is, the formation of a coalition - in the context of the shock doctrine?

Naomi Klein: Yes, absolutely. What I think we are seeing is a clear example of the shock doctrine in the way the Harper government has used the economic crisis to push through a much more radical agenda than they won a mandate to do.

At the same time we are seeing an example of what I call in the book a "shock resistance," where this tactic has been so overused around the world and also in Canada that we are becoming more resistant to the tactic - we are on to them - and Harper is not getting away with it.

What I think is really amazing about this moment is whatever happens next - whether we end up with this coalition or not, we will have an extremely chastened Harper. So the attempted shock doctrine has failed. I think we can say that decisively.

imanxman: Naomi Klein provides us with a level of analysis and cool perspective that makes me proud to be a canadian.
Deride those fools who wave our flag and rant in the streets about stolen democracy for they have not read our laws nor our history! A coalition by its very nature is patriotic. Those who are willing to overlook differences in order to provide responsible government are the true servants of the Common Weal. Long Live Co-operation, Down with the bully boys of Fascism!

"All you need do is stand, and let the tiny ember of love meet its own fate. You don't have to help it, you don't have to applaud it, you don't have to fight for it. Just don't put it out. Just don't extinguish it. Because while it may at first look like that love is between two people you don't know and you don't understand and maybe you don't even want to know, it is, in fact, the ember of your love, for your fellow person.

Just because this is the only world we have. And the other guy counts, too.

What is this, to you? Nobody is asking you to embrace their expression of love. But don't you, as human beings, have to embrace that love?

The world is barren enough. It is stacked against love, and against hope, and against those very few and precious emotions that enable us to go forward.

And here are people overjoyed at the prospect of just that chance, and that work, just for the hope of having that feeling. With so much hate in the world, with so much meaningless division, and people pitted against people for no good reason, this is what your religion tells you to do? With your experience of life and this world and all its sadnesses, this is what your conscience tells you to do?

With your knowledge that life, with endless vigor, seems to tilt the playing field on which we all live, in favor of unhappiness and hate -- this is what your heart tells you to do?"

All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.
From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king.

"Winter of Discontent" ~ imanxman

Down beneath the snowy ice-crust
The Creek runs through Winter

Above the Rain-Clouds
Sun kisses Mountain-peaks.

In the Meadow, voles sleep
That hill of grass remembers your loss

Down beneath the snowy ice-crust
The Creek runs through Winter.
