I opened a door
The one that sits on top of my head
The memories flooded in.

I remember standing in the car
behind my mother's seat,
as she sobbed and cried in fear;
'cause she'd spent too much on groceries,
and for that she'd get beat.
I patted her on her shoulder
To comfort her as best I could.
But I was just three,
and she would have none of that.
That was the first day I had my Koolaid stand.
I tried to give her my pennies,
But she turned away and laughed out loud.

It wasn't the first time.
And it certainly wasn't the last.
