Ed Viesturs is America's leading high altitude mountaineer, having climbed many of the world's most challenging summits, including ascending Mount Everest six times. He recently completed a 16-year quest to climb all 14 of the world's highest mountains (above 8,000 meters) without the use of supplemental oxygen. In doing so, he became the first American and the 5th person in the world to accomplish this. He reached the summit of his 14th peak, Annapurna, on May 12, 2005.

Veikka made northern European mountain climbing history as he reached the summits of all 14 giants without supplementary oxygen. He joins the prestige group of mountain climbing elite in the world. He is the all-time 9th person in the world to climb all eight-thousanders without bottled oxygen.

There is news on the Spanish mountaineer reported missing during a summit push on GII last Sunday. Luis M. Barbero was last seen near the summit; all searching/rescue attempts have been thwarted by bad weather and high avalanche risks since then, according to expedition mates in BC Sechu Lopez and Marta Alejandre.

Tragedy on Broad Peak, 2009 climbing season - Cristina Castagna lost on descent from C4. The summit push launched on Broad Peak last weekend has taken Cristina Castagna's life - the Italian climber reportedly fell to her death on Saturday, while descending back to BC together with mate Giampaolo Casarotto. No summits have been yet confirmed, while some teams report they turned back due to bad conditions.

Tragedy on Nanga Parba, 2009 climbing season : Korean star climber Miss Go lost on Nanga Parbat normal route. Go Mi-Sun ('Ko Mi-young') has been confirmed dead after she went missing on Nanga Parbat Saturday. Details are not yet clear on what exactly caused the accident.

Cerro Aconcagua is the highest mountain in the Americas 6,962 metres (22,841 ft), and the highest mountain outside Asia. It is located in the Andes mountain range, in the Argentine province of Mendoza. The summit is located about 5 kilometres from San Juan Province and 15 kilometres from the international border with Chile. It lies 112 km (70 mi) west by north of the city of Mendoza. Aconcagua is the highest peak in both the Western and Southern Hemispheres. It is one of the Seven Summits.
