There is such a gentle humanity to Gordon's artwork, which means it's nothing like the obnoxious, goofy pieces I churn out. I can learn a lot from him. It's good that he lives two doors away from my house because I will be pestering him. Plus he loves dogs. And Michigan. And I'm particularly fond of that turtle.

Wow, did I ever read this wrong. I was thinking the whole time: $32/hour! I gotta get this man's job!

Nevertheless it's a bit of a straw man argument. Whose to say the people "not stopping" weren't still enjoying the art? It is music, after all. You don't have to look at it to enjoy it. And although ticket-buyers may pay upwards of $100 for a seat in his auditorium, this certainly was the violinist's choice to put a hat out in the subway. If he doesn't get paid his usual wage, isn't that because he's in a very functional setting (underground transportation) and not a concert hall? These people are not there to listen to music, they are there to get from A to B with B=work (most likely.) So while these commuters are getting to their jobs, he's toying with his. (He's one of the lucky ones to have that luxury.) Paying or not paying, like stopping/not stopping, still isn't an indication of appreciation. It's merely a token.

In the end I like the thoughts this provokes. But then I analyzed it and ruined everything for myself.

Yes, I'm missing a chromosome. But it's the bible verse at the bottom that sells this. No, it's the cap. No it's the matching reindeer. Altogether, this is what inspires my artwork. You can keep your counter-culture revolutionaries. Give me a chihuahua any day.

Ironically, this received a thumbs-up on StumbleUpon (one of my favorite useless distractions) and it's in cartoon form, making it palatable information. Now I'm going to dictionary.com to be sure I used the word palatable correctly.

A second thumbs-up to Neil Postman. If anyone nailed our culture, it was him.
