My wife and I begin our 4th and final week this Sunday of Mt. Plesant's local Fitness Course, "Boot Camp". The following list is all the foods I've been plagued by (but successfully avoided):

Reese's Peanut Butter Cups

Ruffles Potato Chips

Starbucks Coffee (although I can and did have a regular coffee with skim milk)

Cheddar cheese (which usually goes on most anything I eat)

Mediterranean Pizza buffet

Breyer's All Natural Vanilla icecream

Kettle corn - homemade at the Pumpkin Festival

Apple dumplings - also very, very homemade at the Pumpkin Festival (I almost caved)

Chocolate chunk cookies - homemade (and still warm) at our local gourmet store

Macaroni & cheese - homemade and incredibly cheesy

Thirteen YouTube Wars

My co-worker "M" and I have cubicles beside each other, but exposed to our entire small office, which enjoys (reluctantly) the entertainment we provide when things are slow (or otherwise). Last July, M was dj'ing and because YouTube offers videos on demand, played "Eyes without a Face", Billy Idol. She then said, "Your turn!" I went with a theme, unbeknownst to her, that she had to figure out. I played, "Hands Across America" because it's just so dated and tacky and bad (which made her laugh) and then announced: stay with the theme. She chose "Achy Breaky Heart" and we all groaned LOUDLY, but I knew she had it: Body Parts. (Never said it was difficult.) And if you ask her, she will take full-credit for this game, but it's all lies that she speaks.

Here are 13 of our YouTube War themes:

1. Turning Japanese - every song that references solo-love including "She Bop", "Dancing with My Mirror" and the entire Divinyls catalogue.

2. Annoy Your Co-worker Day - each song grew increasingly worse. Once M gave a kick to the groin with David Hasselhoff's "Hooked on a Feeling" I knew I had to go for broke with Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On." That ended the contest. I won.

3. Monkeys - I choose George Michael. She chose Peter Gabriel. It was a short war, but sometimes those are the most powerful.

4. The Njords! - Starting with our office theme song, Danny & Armi's "I Want to Love You Tender" we traveled all through Norway (a-ha), Denmark (PB&John) and Sweden (Abba).

5. Insane in the Membrane - We actually were a little jarred by the fact that this theme was very easy to fill up. Gnarls Barkely, Seal, Cypress Hill, Fleetwood Mac - we were all over the map.

6. Old School Rap segued into Nuns - don't ask.

7. Gloomy & Gay - probably M's favorite theme. I chose anything that made you want to slice your (or other's) wrists such as "Dear Mr. Jesus" or Morrissey's "Hated for Loving. She chose the utter 180: "I'm Coming Out" and "It's Raining Men". I got bonus points for Morrissey being both gloomy AND gay.

8. Welcome to the Jungle - Axel Rose meets Morris Day. oh-ee-oh-ee-oh!

9. Actors Who (ahem) "Sing" - a much, much larger category than anyone cares to admit, this theme included Don Johnson's "Heartbeat", Eddie Murphy's "Party All the Time" and Vicki Lawrence's "Night the Lights Went out in Georgia."

10. Domestic Abuse - always a good time! One of our student workers needed a song to go with his PowerPoint presentation of domestic abuse and asked us for help. He'll never do THAT again! "Love Hurts" and "Hurts So Good" were big favorites.

11. Cover Tunes - The originals were good. The remakes are awful. You haven't lived until you've listened to a Cantonese version of Starship's "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" while attempting to award Work Study.

12. Kenny Loggins - his oeuvre of bad taste is astounding. And for good measure this theme can also include any solo artist with a vast catalogue: Madonna, Prince, Coolio. We even had a Donny Osmond war.

13. Country Gone Bad - Arguably, this includes all country music so we had to limit ourselves to '70's cross-over hits like "Convoy" and "D.I.V.O.R.C.E."

I just learned the guy who sang "Together in Electric Dreams" and the lead singer of the Human League are the SAME MAN! It's going to be a day of revelations, though I don't know how any will top that one.
