I went to the mall on Wednesday, and while I was there, I ran into a gym buddy of mine. I had just completed an audit for Hewlett-Packard at a local office supplies store, so I was dressed nicely; business casual clothing, hair, makeup, the whole nine yards. That's not the case at the gym, of course. There, you'll find me just out of bed, hair up in a ponytail or clip, makeup-less face, and wearing a T-shirt and sweats.

My friend approached me and gave me a hug, then she said, "I can't get over how CUTE you are. Wow! And your hair is so pretty!" I swear, she must have said this at least five times during our conversation. After she left, I thought to myself, hmmmm....I must look really awful when I go to the gym! LOL! I know she didn't mean it that way. And really, I should be ashamed of myself for taking a compliment and turning it around into an insult. It's something I'm a little guilty of doing, and it's one of the many things on my "You must really stop that!" list.

However...you will find me taking a little more care with my personal appearance before I go out from now on...Nothing wrong with that, is there? Nahhh.... :)

Several years ago, I decided to grow my hair out and donate it to Locks of Love. At the time, I had no idea how attached I'd get to it. Silly, I know. It's only hair, after all. But, I got to the point where I really loved having long hair. I especially loved all of the compliments!

As time went by though, more and more friends and family members started commenting on it. For months, my sister has been fussing at me: "You need to cut your hair!" I've also been hearing, "Your hair is really long, when are you going to cut it?" I freely admit, I've been balking. I knew I should cut and donate it, but I no longer really wanted to. The thought of cutting my hair was actually starting to be painful for me.

A couple of weeks ago, I mentioned cutting it again to my friend, Tracy, and I told her how hard it was going to be for me. Tracy kindly and gently began leading me forward. She offered to help me find a new hairstyle, to go with me when I cut it, and finally, she simply made a hair appointment for the both of us. We could go and get our hair cut together. She gave me that little nudge, but she was never, ever pushy about it. I love her for that.

As I began to seriously contemplate cutting my hair, my thoughts led me to the child who was going to benefit from it. He or she had none, and here I was selfishly clinging to mine. I began to feel deeply ashamed for withholding happiness from someone else.

And so...yesterday, I finally did it. It really is only hair after all. And you know what? It'll grow back.
