BGI's presentation to the Community Board 1 Transportation and Environment Committees (Greenpoint/Williamsburg) promoted the continued development of a 12+ mile continuous stretch of green space through Brooklyn that would include "more than 250 new street trees," a more inviting streetscape, better pedestrian environment, bike paths, more.

It's getting to be that time of year. Breaking out of Winter hibernation, starting to think about Spring. To some Brooklynites that means it 's time to start thinking about the community garden, landscaping the yard, and other green thumb activities. I stumbled upon this neat little story of a 3 year-old organic lavender farm in Bucks County, PA -- called Carousel Farm -- that was recently featured in Martha Stewart's magazine Living. Over 15,000 organically-grown plants; each one planted, pruned, and harvested by hand. Soaps, lotions, oils, lip balm, candles, etc, available online or at 3R Living in Park Slope, Brooklyn.

NYC to use oysters to treat water downstream from a wastewater treatment plant. Each oyster can filter 5 - 50 gallons of water per day. Oysters absorb nitrogen, algae and bacteria, depositing them in the sediment at the water's bottom. The oyster beds also serve as the foundation for an ecosystem that can support other marine species. Read on....
