<p>I've read a few articles on the whole <a rel="nofollow" target="_new" href="http://www.stumbleupon.com/to//newyorkmetro.com/nymetro/news/columns/powergrid/15202/index.html/t:4b3301e65fd46;src:blog">Google print debate</a>, and I don't see why its so hard to come to an agreement. Obviously the publishers will benefit from better organization and retrieval, but it does seem unfair that Google keeps all the profits when scanning a book is so much easier than writing one. Authors still need financial incentives to produce lengthy works, and although increased publication visibility will improve author awareness it may still stifle the production of useful new content. Both the production and discovery/distribution of content are important tasks, so why not split the profits down the middle? Google would simply have to have a "adbooks" account balance for the ISBN/publisher of each book scanned, and place 50% of the advertising revenue derived from a given work into that account. Once a publishers' balance had surpassed $50 they could claim the balance, and everybody wins. I think this solution would avoid the logistical nightmare of receiving permission from each publisher, yet still allow publishers to profit from the venture (it would actually become a cooperative affair). In fact, I think this approach would be particularly beneficial for authors/publishers of books which are out of print but still in copyright. Instantly their works' visibility would increase substantially, and they may even make money they wouldn't have seen otherwise. It would reveal the "long tail" of offline content to the world yet keep writers writing. Wouldn't such an arrangement constitute "fair use" and benefit everyone?</p>
