Twitterature! A few of my favorites:

Gone with the Wind: "Hate the war. Luv Rhett! Luv Ashley! WTH to do? I'll ask BFF Melanie! She's dead? Rhett's gone? #FAIL"

Lord of the Flies: shot down and stranded, a group of boys try to play nice... but boys will be boys.

In 1917, John Hezekiah ("Hezzie") Pattrick was working in Washington, D.C., and attending George Washington University. When President Wilson signed the Selective Service Act, Hezzie went to the War Department to volunteer for civilian support work, one of the first to do so. Ten days later, on May 28, 1917, he sailed with General John Pershing on the Baltic in the first detachment of American troops to France. This exhibit tells his story through his letters home to his parents, his photographs and postcards, and items worn, used and collected by him. His experiences as a civilian and then a junior officer serving at various behind-the-lines posts provides different view from the accounts of those who served in the trenches.

The Ravenna Mosaic Company, begun 1923 as a partnership between the German mosaic firm Puhl-Wagner-Heinersdorf and the St. Louis-based Emil Frei Glass Studio, was founded to participate in the construction of what is now the St. Louis Cathedral Basilica, which was designed to house the largest collection of mosaics in the world. For sixty-five years, Ravenna's studios in New York and St. Louis collaborated with some of the most important muralists of the twentieth century, including Hildreth Meiere, Winold Reiss, John de Rosen, and Richard Haines. Thus, result, this study of the Ravenna Mosaic Company offers a fairly comprehensive survey of American mural art, both secular and profane. The photography on this site isn't great, but the story of the murals and their variety are fascinating.

Kansas City's Local 627, the African-American Musicians Union, founded in 1917, and now known as the Mutual Musicians Foundation, is credited with having created Kansas City style jazz. The union operated as a social center, a clearinghouse for engagements, and a vehicle for grievances against unfair practices by booking agents and band leaders. A wonderful site with detailed historical information and extensive photos. Music included. (Note: I had trouble with this site in Firefox. It worked quite well in Chrome.)
