Malaysian election results:

A snapshot of a ruling party out of touch with change in the country. More at:

http://www.nst.com.my/Election08

To my vast amusement the commentators on the government controlled news channels struggled to explain the results.

Malaysia's Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi retained his Kepala Batas parliamentary seat in Penang with a reduced 11,246-vote majority.

Another UMNO leader running in an urban constituency is Datuk Shahrizat Abdul Jalil. She lost in the Lembah Pantai constituency by 2895 votes having won by a comfortable majority of 15288 in the 2004 election.

Mr. Lim Kit Siang of the opposition party DAP won the Ipoh Timor parliamentary seat with a majority of 21,942 votes. DAP's Teresa Kok has retained her Seputeh seat in Kuala Lumpur with a 36,565 majority.

The states of Penang and Selangor and the Federal Territory (Kuala Lumpur) all returned a majority of opposition candidates in constituencies that are far larger than those in other states.

DAP's Jeff Ooi a first-time candidate and well known blogger won the three-cornered fight for the Jelutong parliamentary seat with a 16,246-vote majority.

Another first time candidate, prominent businessman and Umno youth deputy chief, Khairy Jamaluddin (who also happens to be the prime minister's son-in-law) won the Rembau parliament seat by polling 26,525 votes against Badrul Hisham Shaharin from Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), who managed 20,779 votes. Khairy won by a 5,746 majority while there were 1,066 spoilt votes.

"Even now, more than three months after I was freed, it can still seem faintly magical to do the simplest things, like walk down a street in the sunshine, or sit in a cafe with a newspaper.

And in my captivity in Gaza, I learnt again that oldest of lessons. That in life, all that really, really matters, are the people you love. "

http://www.boingboing.net/2007/04/01/orwells_london_neigh.html

Orwell's London neighborhood covered with spy-cameras

On the wall outside his former residence - flat number 27B - where Orwell lived until his death in 1950, an historical plaque commemorates the anti-authoritarian author. And within 200 yards of the flat, there are 32 CCTV cameras, scanning every move.

Ironic.
