My soucsin, 'I'm Jeremy, and in early September I decided I was going to quit my job, sell all my stuff, give up my apartment and move into my van. I was pretty excited about all this, and with my usual impulsiveness set everything in motion to make it happen. Now it's early November, my job is finished, and I have one month to get everything ready before I go nomadic.

Some people say they're envious, others think I'm totally off my rocker, but everyone seems to find it interesting, so I thought I'd chronicle the whole thing here. I hope you enjoy it."

Inspired by early 80s gang movies, Robots tells the story of two rival gangs who engage in their own back-alley version of robot wars, pitting one robot against the other in a battle to the finish. But when one robot chooses compassion over malice, the gang members are forced to question their own hatred and animosity towards each other.

How schools stifle creativity - CNN.com

What is the argument? In a nutshell, it's that we're all born with immense natural talents but our institutions, especially education, tend to stifle many of them and as a result we are fomenting a human and an economic disaster.

In education, this vast waste of talent involves a combination of factors. They include a narrow emphasis on certain sorts of academic work; the exile of arts, humanities and physical education programs from schools; arid approaches to teaching math and sciences; an obsessive culture of standardized testing and tight financial pressures to teach to the tests.

The result is a disastrous waste of talent among students and their teachers. To sense the scale of this disaster, you only have to look at the alarming rates of turnover among faculty and the levels of drop out, disaffection, stress and prescription drug use among students. Even for students who stay the course and do well in education, the rules of success have changed irrevocably. Just look at the plummeting value of college degrees.

From the page: "With a Stolen Red Lipstick Bible on Her Side"

Natural Snow Buildings, an experimental/postrock unit from France. And last.fm has a bunch of their stuff for free download. Here's the page you can grab this track from. It has superficial resemblances to, say, the peak work of Godspeed You! Black Emperor: but instead of GY!BE's ascents (or perhaps escalantes, if you're Matt Webb), they produce zones, spaces, still fields. Good night music.
