To this container, this sculpture, the user brings his baggage, his program, and interacts with it to accommodate his needs. If he can't do that, I've failed."

Frank Gehry first came to my attention when the Guggenheim in Bilbao was being completed and frankly, I'd never heard of that city before but was awestruck by the beauty of the lines and curves created for what I consider to be a modern marvel! If I can ever bear to get on a plane again, or maybe afford the time and cost of a ship, well actually you have to fly to the ship I think! Anyway, it is on my list of places I must see, should I ever have the patience to travel in today's horrid travel conditions. Gehry has a few horrible buildings in the L.A. area built I believe in a different era. I think they're really pretty unsightly although I'm sure somebody somewhere finds beauty in them too. I have come to love Gehry's other buildings which are so whimsical such as the "Dancing House", in Prague, pictured above. Looking through his other works there are several along these lines which seem to defy convention. I had an assignment to build a model sculpture from paper or cardboard for a design class and was so frustrated by the exercise it spawned a new interest, love and respect for architecture in me. All this to say that Frank Gehry is my favorite contemporary architect!!

Life is borne by a fundamental trust preceding every personal volition and not dependent on any rational justification. Human existence is anchored in a primordial trust neither in need of nor in search of grounds. Through this faith, which in the strict sense is not an act of any autonomous, 'I', the world in whichwe live always appears clothed with a certain evidence. We do not begin as if seeking justification for what we do. The experience of alienation or of a more radical confusion is possible only against the already pliant background of minimal familiarity with the world. because of this self-evidence, what we do happens automatically and despite me. This fundamental trust does not imply or correspond to any specific or explicit consciousness. Instead, we stand in it; we live from a trust that supports us.
