New Online Business Owners: Free Web Hosting Is Bad For Your Business Health

I own a web hostnig / development company. I can't tell you how many times people want something for free.

That's fine, I do too. But as an entrepreneur myself, I just can't get over the mentality some business owners have (usually the new ones with a lot to learn) who think the best way to start their online business is to use free web hosting.

From an experienced and educated point of view, this is the wrong move. Web hosting is probably one of the cheapest things you will spend money on for your business. If you're starting a new online business, take it from me, get your business started on the right foot.

If you decide to go the "free" web hosting route, you're going to have issues. Here are a few reason why free web hosting is bad for your business health:

Bottlenecks - your site will run much slower

Low bandwidth and disk space

Lack of tools - usually translates to no FTP, no PHP, and no database usage. The means no blog, no forum, limited e-commerce solutions, etc.

Ads - you gotta display ads on your website (just what your customers were hoping to see)

Little Support - paid customers get preference over your free account for help

You don't get your own domain name

Bad SEO - You want search engines to get to know your website, not geocities or freewebs.

Usually no personalized email address - um, did you say you wanted to start an online business?

Keep in mind if you go 1 year with free web hosting and then decide to graduate up, you have to start all over again for letting our buddy Googlebot. That's 1 year your website could have aged for search engine optimization.

In business, try to never under deliver. Promise what you know you can give your customer and then try for a little better. If you're successful, you will wow them. And nothing's better than "wowing" your customer.
