From the page: "But the candy is a problem. It's not that I have anything against sugary deliciousness. It's not that I oppose special rules--or the lifting of rules--during special times like holidays. But candy is a real problem for my older daughter. Five minutes after ingesting sugar, she goes through something like David Banner goes through when he gets annoyed. But instead of the Incredible Hulk, she turns into the Anti-Nat. My sweet child becomes whiney, willful and completely out-of-her-mind hyperactive."

Giving all kids self-esteem, not entitlement | BlogHer

From the page: "My son, on the other hand, once inspired me to write about his unflagging self-esteem and general cheerfulness. That was five years ago, when I consistently characterized him as the happiest kid I'd ever known. I couldn't even imagine him any other way. But time marched on, and five years later, it turns out that he is struggling to feel normal, because he's not like "everyone else." He has Asperger's Syndrome, and he is acutely aware of the many ways in which he doesn't fit in, doesn't do what others expect of him, doesn't seem "normal" to his peers.

Five years later, his self-esteem is nothing like what it used to be. He doesn't like himself. He wants to be like everyone else, and feels badly that he isn't. And we have a long road ahead of us to rebuild his internal sense of worth when society will continue to find him "different.""

From the page: "My mom and I were waiting to watch an indoor dolphin show at one of the parks. Before it started, we were talking to the show's announcer. He said that he was worried that the dolphins weren't going to follow directions and cooperate for the planned show. He explained that they were in mating season (Disney had the males & females separated, so we'd only be viewing the males) and that the males sometimes had a mind of their own during that time. He reminded me that dolphins are mammals just like us and that male dolphins (particularly Bottlenose) are known to rape and gang rape their female counterparts. YES. The SAME dolphins that are spreading healing power to women on these sexual assault retreats are also capable of gang rape within their own species!"

From the page: "What is Social Learning or Learning in Public?

Learning in private is what most of us did in school. You wrote your essay, studied your spelling words, took tests (without looking at anyone else's answers). Learning was an individual, often solitary activity. for many of us, that learning style carried over to our work culture where we are rewarded for our expertise and to keep private what we don't know."

As an adoptee, a black woman who was raised by a white family, I have been on the receiving end of bonding difficulties, of cultural confusion and the harsh reality that even though you might be legally bound to your family members, the fact that you are not their 'blood' makes a huge difference."
