Fairness--and resentment at the perceived lack of it--is an ingrained human instinct. It's one of the first things children learn to complain about. But it's more atavistic, even prehuman. In one experiment, scientists at Emory University offered capuchin monkeys food in exchange for tokens. The monkeys were happy to get slices of cucumber, until they saw other monkeys getting grapes, at which point they got angry and stopped cooperating.

From the page: "Men were tentative when writing about make-up or other stereotypically feminine topics, especially when they thought they were writing to a woman, he found. For example, one man, believing he was corresponding with a woman, wrote: "maybe girls prefer the quality of products at Sephora over other major department stores? I don't know."" - What idiot came up with this study. Maybe people are more tentative when they actually don't know something.

From the page: "22 divisions against 1 million Japanese defenders on the main island of Honshu and the Tokyo Plain. Itâ€s goal: the unconditional surrender of Japan. With the exception of a part of the British Pacific Fleet, Operation Downfall was to be a strictly American operation. It called for using the entire Marine Corps, the entire Pacific Navy, elements of the 7th Army Air Force, the 8 Air Force (recently redeployed from Europe), 10th Air Force and the American Far Eastern Air Force. More than 1.5 million combat soldiers, with 3 million more in support or more than 40% of all servicemen still in uniform in 1945 â€" would be directly involved in the two amphibious assaults. Casualties were expected to be extremely heavy.

Intel offers distributed computing to 250 Million Facebook users - Bright Side Of News*

The "Progress through Processors" campaign is dedicated to expanding the knowledge about distributed computing to new audiences, ones that are not as tech savvy as most of readers on the site. But that doesn't matter - what matters is to expand the reach of distributed computing to hundreds of millions of Facebook users.

Truth to be told, this is nothing else but an interface to download the BOINC [Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Networked Computing] client with pre-selected and pre-registered projects [you register and select inside the Facebook app itself].

All in all, this is a pretty simple idea from Grid Republic, supported by Intel. The only thing that nobody will tell you is that using a GPU, e.g. a graphics card is much more efficient than using a processor... hence, why not use both?

The truth about grit - The Boston Globe

In recent years, psychologists have come up with a term to describe this mental trait: grit. Although the idea itself isn't new - "Genius is 1 percent inspiration and 99 percent perspiration," Thomas Edison famously remarked - the researchers are quick to point out that grit isn't simply about the willingness to work hard. Instead, it's about setting a specific long-term goal and doing whatever it takes until the goal has been reached. It's always much easier to give up, but people with grit can keep going.

Malaria appears to have originated in chimpanzees and jumped over to humans at some point in the last two million years, bucking the leading theory that the disease had evolved along with humans.

After gathering blood samples from nearly 100 chimpanzees in central Africa, researchers uncovered eight new strains of the parasite that causes chimp malaria. By comparing genes from the new chimp strains to genes from human malaria, scientists discovered that like HIV, our malaria bug is a gift from chimpanzee
