Dalai Lama's 18 rules for living

At the start of the new millennium the Dalai Lama apparently issued eighteen rules for living. Since word travels slowly in the digital age these have only just reached me. Here they are.

1. Take into account that great love and great achievements involve great risk.
2. When you lose, don't lose the lesson.
3. Follow the three Rs:
1. Respect for self
2. Respect for others
3. Responsibility for all your actions.
4. Remember that not getting what you want is sometimes a wonderful stroke of luck.
5. Learn the rules so you know how to break them properly.
6. Don't let a little dispute injure a great friendship.
7. When you realize you've made a mistake, take immediate steps to correct it.
8. Spend some time alone every day.
9. Open your arms to change, but don't let go of your values.
10. Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer.
11. Live a good, honourable life. Then when you get older and think back, you'll be able to enjoy it a second time.
12. A loving atmosphere in your home is the foundation for your life.
13. In disagreements with loved ones, deal only with the current situation. Don't bring up the past.
14. Share your knowledge. It's a way to achieve immortality.
15. Be gentle with the earth.
16. Once a year, go someplace you've never been before.
17. Remember that the best relationship is one in which your love for each other exceeds your need for each other.
18. Judge your success by what you had to give up in order to get it.

Moving your heart closer to mine
As I say this to you,
I am drawn to the thoughts of my love;
I am moved to say that I am very close to your heart;
I want to express what these last few weeks have meant to me.
Is it possible that our hearts were always meant to be together?

The moments that I spend

The moments that I spend with you,
are the moments that I see.

So with the coming of the
new crop of poppies in Afghanistan,
I am draw out of my world.
I wander the streets, in search of
all the flowers that are in full bloom.
To show the metaphor in full color.
There is so much that we as westerners, don’t understand yet…
We have to get a grasp at what is happening locally,
before we can get involved
in something that is going on in another part of the world…
Before we start to judge why someone works all day,
in the Poppy fields, removing opium from the poppy pods,
we should look at who the opium is consumed by…
Doctors all over the globe rely on the medicinal properties of the flower,
to ease the human suffering in a large number of individuals…
It is this magic pill,
that makes your loving spouse that is suffering from a debilitating illness;
your mother or father that is just recovering from a long and life altering operation;
Or, possibly a client that is lying on their death bed…trying to cope with the pain…
and yes even the addict that is, for all state and purpose suffering…
For is the man working in the poppy fields,
not just trying to ease the suffering of his or her family,
by providing an income…
Are the soldiers there for the right reasons?
Whose agenda is being fulfilled…
Once we look at the real reason the war is about,
we soon see the Metaphor in the beauty of the flower…
