Gnu Joke

The Crist family worked at a zoo. Each year they predicted the general luck and overall mood of the year by watching the the gnu. If the gnu's ears were forward, that meant a successful, joyous year was almost certain to happen. But if his ears were laid back flat against his head, it meant that an unlucky or very unhappy year was sure to come.

One year it was young Mary's turn to "survey" the animal and come up with the prediction. It was her first time solo, and in her excitement, she forgot to take the key to the cage. She was late in coming to check on the gnu. Well, she saw the wrong ear position and predicted a bad year, when in fact it was quite good.

To explain the error, the local newspaper ran the following headline a year later: MARY CRIST MISSES AN HAPPY GNU'S EAR!

Entertaining Idiots

I once wrote a book called How to Keep an Idiot Entertained for Hours. It went like this: To keep an idiot entertained for hours, read the next sentence. To keep an idiot entertained for hours, read the previous sentence." It didn't sell very well.

I thought with the short attention span of people these days it may have been too long, so I rewrote it. The 2nd edition went: "To keep an idiot busy for hours, re-read this sentence."

It's doing pretty good. I have a deal for the sequel. The 3rd edition is going to go: "Re-read this line."

Trouble is, I'm not as sharp as I used to be, so it's become my favorite book to curl up with on a rainy day. It absorbs me for hours.

I had to go to Toronto for an audition on the 7th of Sept.but did not see any big stars out.I was up there in the morning until about 3:00pm in the afternoon.I was in a different part of town.Sometimes I do run into an actor or two but not always.Toronto is a big city. You never know who you might run into.Sometimes it is a small world.

Just a thought. As an actor I know first hand how much stress an actor goes through every day.Acting is one of the hardest jobs I have ever had. From the time I get a call to go on an audition till the time I head back home I am under stress.I am almost glad the audition is over and I am heading home.It is one load of my back. But,once I am back home I have to wait to see if I will get a call back or a (second audition).More stress.Every time the phone rings your thinking,"is that a call back or a (second audition")? I go over to the phone and look at the caller ID.It is another 1-800 #.Pretty soon you no longer answer the phone. You just look at the caller ID.When I do get work you think, great! The rest is easy wright?Wrong. After you do win an audition the work just begins.Paperwork, running around from my agents office to the union then to a wardrobe fitting all this before I walk onto the set to go to work.Easy?Give it a try.You will find out how hard an actors job is.-Daryl
