Where conscience prevails there is a barrier against the domination of human orders and human whim, something sacred that must remain inviolable and that in an ultimate sovereignty evades control not only by oneself but by every external agency. Only the absoluteness of conscience is the complete antithesis to tyranny; only the recognition of its inviolability protects human beings from each other and from themselves; only its rule guarantees freedom.

Zille Huma Usman assassinated
Written by pub
Tuesday, 20 February 2007
LAHORE, Feb 20 (APP)- Punjab Minister for Social Welfare, Zille Huma Usman who sustained critical head injuries in an murderous attack in Gujranwala, succumbed to the wounds during surgery at Lahore General Hospital (LGH) here Tuesday afternoon.

According to a spokesman of LGH, the neurosurgery was carried out by Prof Nazir Ahmad and Dr. Khalid Bashir.

She was airlifted to the provincial capital from Gujranwala by a helicopter for treatment soon after the murderous attack by a person identified as Sarwar.

36 years old Zilla Huma Usman, the wife of Dr. Muhammad Usman Haider, was born on September 16, 1971.

She obtained the degree of LL.B. in 1997 and M.A. (Political Science) in 1998 from University of the Punjab, Lahore.

She was elected as Member Provincial Assembly of Punjab in General Elections 2002 against reserved women seat.

She worked as Parliamentary Secretary for Planning and Development from August 5, 2003 to November 30, 2006. She was working as Minister for Social Welfare since December 1, 2006.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Truthout 11 March 2007

"Not a day passes without fanaticism making its presence felt in Pakistan," noted - not without reason - the Anglophone daily "Dawn's" editorialist, the day after the assassination of Punjab's minister for social welfare by a "religious extremist." The murderer, who - according to his own testimony - had already killed six other women he considered immoral, was released for "lack of evidence," and also because he benefited from powerful religious godfathers. In a speech broadcast over the radio, the head of Jamaat ud-Dawa - which figures on the American list of terrorist organizations - Hafiz Saeed, who, depending on which way pressure is being exerted, leaves and returns to prison, justified the crime, and warned "all Pakistani women that if they tried to follow the path of Zille Huma Usman (the assassinated minister), they (would undergo) the same fate."

"By bowing to the demands of the fundamentalists, who have taken the entire nation hostage to their whims, the government becomes an accomplice to their acts," wrote "The Post's" editorialist, denouncing the authorities' inertia before the threats received by girls' schools in the North-West border province. In Swat, the authorities recently attempted to arrest a mullah who declared the polio vaccine "anti-Islamic," but they withdrew before a crowd of faithful who protected him. The examples of the extremists' determination to dictate their demands are virtually quotidian and no longer limited to the Tribal areas where the government has relinquished the ground to them.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Now stop and consider this situation. I see no clearway out, because the mindset of those involved could not allow it. This story will run on and on like a weeping wound. Compassion is the only tool I can bring to bear that makes any sense.

There will also be a banner saying 'don't pass the torch to torture.', and as many people as we can get marching with us. We hope to have the support of some MSPs.

If anyone else would like to help flyering/ postering please could you get hold of James on 07986 000826, and he can give you some flyers or posters - please try and get as many people to come as possible so we can make this the best day of action for Tibet ever

Also, on Tuesday the 13th of March, at 7:00 at the David Hume Tower:
Tibetan Human Rights Defender talks about life in Tibet
Come and listen to the extraordinary testimony and experiences of underground Tibetan activist and human rights defender, Dewatsang Sangye, who was forced to flee in fear of his safety from Tibet as a result of his clandestine work supporting former political prisoners. Sangye worked secretly underground, and at great risk of being arrested, to improve the lives of former political prisoners. Eventually he was forced to flee in fear of his safety after his heroic work was discovered.

Sangye will be talking about the intensification in control of Tibetan religious life and the risks he took in supporting former political prisoners, many of whom are monks and nuns. The talk is certain to be compelling and will offer the audience the opportunity to appreciate the grim reality of life in China and Tibet for dissidents.

Pope Benedict to Meet With Dalai Lama
AP[Thursday, October 12, 2006 06:22]
Pope Benedict XVI will meet with the Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of Tibet, on Friday, the Italian news agency ANSA reported.

The Dalai Lama met with Pope John Paul II at least nine times, including a 2003 visit that the Vatican kept low-key to avoid a further chill in its icy relations with China.

The Dalai Lama wants autonomy for Tibet, which China has occupied since 1951. He led about 80,000 Tibetans into exile in 1959, and heads a government-in-exile in Dharamsala, India.

Two deluded actions (links 2 and 10) arise from three deluded causes (links 1, 8 and 9); seven uncontrolled results (links 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 11 and 12) arise from those two deluded actions. Again three deluded causes arise from these seven results. Such a wheel of life goes round and round.

"A Wish for Negativity to Subside"
A Doha by Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche

We are obliged to cherish and protect this world,
The place we humans call our home.
So why pointlessly destroy any source
Of our world's prosperity?
May the truth of all buddhas in the ten directions
Help bring an end to all such deluded actions.
May raising the attitude of love and compassion
Help peace and happiness spread throughout the world.

The way of all civilized people
Is to protect one's life and precious body.
How pitiful to cast away and destroy it
In the delusion that it may be used as a weapon.

May the nectar of Truth, calm and soothing,
Completely pacify such violent intent.
May the attitude of love and compassion
Blossom in all people throughout the world.

The way of noble people is to help others
And the universal norm is to protect oneself.
May the pitiful wish to destroy both self and others,
Such an unwholesome thought and deed fade forever.

May the truthful speech of bodhisattvas and virtuous people,
The truthful speech of the pure nature of reality,
Promote peace and harmony here in our world
So that everyone might enjoy the wealth of happiness and well-being.
