"Fiji Water is sold as the epitome of chic, but there's a darker side to its ritzy image. The water racks up its carbon footprint by being transported to Scotland from half way across the globe, and its sexy uber-cool image is doing wonders for the country it hails from. Fiji after all is a nation ruled by one of the world's most repressive regimes.

The elected government of the Fiji islands in the South Pacific was overthrown by a military coup in 2006, led by the armed forces commander, Frank Bainimarama. His rule was declared illegal by the Fiji court of appeal in April this year, since he has abolished the judiciary, banned public gatherings and delayed elections until 2014.

In the circumstances, how Fiji Water has managed to maintain its image as the water celebrities like to be seen drinking is a marvel of the marketing age. But now, the cracks are beginning to show."

"YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter are channels for us to post snippets of content to drive folks to a much deeper, more meaningful place of content, and they aren't original.

Twitter, and to a lesser extent Facebook, is a new version of the AP news wire. Since 1846, the Associated Press has sent out snippets of content in rapid succession to its member newspapers. If anything caught a journalist's eye, he'd go research it. That's exactly what even the most esteemed journalists are doing on Twitter and in the blogosphere these days."

"To say an entire generation has given up because they don't vote or participate in party politics is farcical.

Yes, young people reject the status quo, but it is deeper than that. They eschew the tools that Martin wants them to use - not just party politics but traditional media as well. They reject the whole system. But this isn't out of juvenile laziness, but for the very opposite reason. In a world filled with choice, one that fragments our attention, they seek to focus their energy where they will be most effective and efficient - at the moment, that frequently means they are uninterested in the slow and byzantine machinations of politics (why engage when every party, even the NDP are conservative), the snobbishness of traditional media (when's the last time a columnist on the Globe actually responded to a reader's comment on the website?) or a hierarchical and risk-averse public service (held hostage by the country's auditor general)."

The introduction says it all... or what you should read first:

"Most bike commuters find that the negative assumptions they had about bike commuting are mostly false. This goes double for women, who might find that riding in high heels is easier than walking in them; a special wardrobe is not necessarily required (though fun); and that biking boosts a sense of freedom in ways a car no longer can. Benefits to women are multiple, and the benefits to society are just as big. Read on for how we all get dividends when women take to their bikes."
