I'd love to live in a house like this -- it's so beautiful. But when I see things like this, I always wonder if you can build it in a place where you're not forced to use a car to get around. Where's the bus stop?

From the page: "Even at just a few months old, babies can size up others and decide whom they'd rather hang out with, a new study finds.

Deciding whom to spend time with is an important ability for humans and other social animals because we must cooperate with each other, said study leader Kiley Hamlin of Yale University, and knowing who's likely to cooperate and who isn't can be valuable information when choosing associates."

Emotions do not affect cancer survival: study| Health| Reuters

If a positive attitude really helped, no one would die of cancer. Since I'm a bit of a cynic, I think this requirement for sick people to be brave and upbeat is more for the benefit of those around them who can't handle it.

From the page: "The analysis showed that emotional status was not associated with survival rate. A person's emotions were not associated with survival even after taking into account other factors, such as gender, tumor site or disease stage, Coyne and colleagues report in the journal Cancer."

Using religion to avoid vaccination, revisited : Respectful Insolence

From the page: "It would be one thing if these parents lived in isolated communities, where they could exist without exposing others to the dangers due to their foolish choice not to vaccinate, but such is not the case. The children of these parents are going to schools with your children, and their children can and do serve as a nidus for outbreaks of vaccine-preventable disease. This is because no vaccine is 100%, and those who fail to develop immunity are protected by "herd immunity," the indirect protection of susceptible members of the population by the presence of a high percentage of immune individuals. "

Greta Christinas Blog: Atheists and Anger

From the page: "I think we need to have some goddamn perspective about this anger business. I mean, I look at organized Christianity in this country -- not just the religious right, but some more "moderate" churches as well -- interfering with AIDS prevention efforts, trying to get their theology into the public schools, actively trying to prevent me and Ingrid from getting legally married, and pulling all the other shit I talk about in this piece.

And I look at atheists sometimes being mean-spirited and snarky in blogs and books and magazines.

And I think, Can we please have some goddamn perspective? "

From the page: "Few experimental studies have been conducted on the effect of religion, but Azim Shariff and Ara Norenzayan believe they have come up with a paradigm that does demonstrate some effects of religion on behavior. Their study combines two well-researched phenomena: the dictator game and the scrambled-sentence paradigm."

Breast Cancer Awareness Month abused by Mike Adams : Respectful Insolence

From the page: "Even if it is true that some companies take advantage of Pink Ribbon campaigns in order to increase their bottom line, that would not justify the fear-mongering and misinformation that Adams is spreading, misinformation that could mean the difference between life and death, particularly his dismissive attitude towards mammography and statements that they are "worthless." Breast cancer, when found early, is one of the most treatable of cancers, but once it metastasizes not even Mike Adams "native" miracle cures can stop it."
