SEO is not Rocket science

These ethical SEO tips are aimed at both the beginner and experienced Internet Marketeer, primarily at those wishing to conduct their own search engine optimisation. Within this peice I am looking at onsite with offsite at a later date; the steps represent the basics before embarking on any offsite SEO campaign, get this right within your website and you have the building blocks to acheive a high position in the search engines. Get them wrong and you may struggle, get them right and you will strive.

1. Research your key words and phrases - ensure you know what the customer types into Google and Yahoo when looking for the products/services you supply/provide.

2. Your page title tag reflects the page and is relevent to what you sell on that page - if you are selling fax broadcasting then your title should be fax broadcasting, a page within your site that sells 'fax marketing' should be titled 'fax marketing'. Dont have the same title for every page on your site, target key words and phrases to that page - got it? (very important SEO tip)

3. The meta description is also important; ensure it contains the key phrase for that page and dont duplicate accross the site.

4. Mention your key phrase on every page within the text but target the text to certain phrases i.e. theoretically speaking my site is about 'Harry Potter' one of my pages is about 'harry Potter books, the URL for that page should be 'harry potter books' within the text on that page I will also include the key phrase for the index page which is 'harry potter'? But don't go overboard, make it natural, think if you'd be the user.

5. The H1 / H2 tags should also contain you key words.

6. use alt meta tags on your images - helps those with dissabilities and is one of the points the spiders look for top tip - ensure they contain your key phrase.

7. Once you have completed all of the above, sign up for a Google webmaster account, read how to write an XHTML site map and submit it onto your server and tell Google where it is - probably the best way to get your pages into Google and Yahoo.

8. Install/learn and use Google analytics.

9. Make sure that conversion/defined action tracking analytics are installed (Heatmap tracking, conversion trackers from PPC platforms, Indextools action trackers, etc).

10. Register / validate your site through Google Webmaster central to be able to analyze incoming links and validate a few things (like your robots.txt file).

11. Do a quick IP location test to make sure you're hosted near your main market.

12. Get xhtml/w3c validated.

Thats all I would like to mention in this post, their are more tips to acheiving a high position - some of which I prefer to keep to myself (so I can gain the highest position for my clients of course) Acheive the above for your site and you are well on your way to acheiving a high position in the Major search engines, which off course means more hits = more business.

Next I will look/chat about offsite (as important if not more than onsite SEO)

Now Ive wrote this, I am open to questions/critisism/whatever you want to ask? Only after questions have been answered will I divulge into the abyiss of offsite SEO.

DIY marketing - SEO and Fax
Consider DIY marketing through SEO and fax marketing! Cost effective option without spending a small fortune.
Within your marketing strategy do you concentrate on the traditional marketing methods like advertising in magazines, or on other high ranking websites etc? Have you considered, or do you invest in other areas that are more cost effective and long term? Are you or your business missing out on valuable areas that could mean the difference between success and failure? Let me outline some cost effective and efficient strategies that may help you to achieve your aim of increased leads without paying for expensive advertising in magazines. In fact some of the methods described here can be carried out by you or your company / employees! Advertising in magazines and yellow directories costs your company a small fortune. There are other less expensive options that should be considered, that can gain you as much if not more custom.
Firstly I would like to explain how to get your small business to the top 10 in a Google search for your key phrases. Secondly, how a fax marketing campaign can gain you more custom than an expensive advert in a monthly magazine.
Fax marketing
Most companies hate receiving unsolicited faxes - fact. It is annoying on a regular basis; the sender is using up all of your paper and line time! Scoundrels!! I must agree that I too hate these fax marketing techniques and get pretty upset every time the machine indicates another, more annoying than junk emails!
However, occasionally one prints' that advertise a service that I am interested in, this fax is often filed away for future correspondence as I find the said companies' services interesting. Most of the faxes I receive are irrelevant to my business and marketing strategy, however there are some that I do contact. These are normally those faxes sent from reputable marketing companies and occasionally I ring and adopt the advertised services; the remainder go in file 13 (also known as the bin).
Let's analyse that? On average it costs several hundred pounds to employ a professional fax marketing company to send out 20,000 - 30,000 faxes. If you're chosen fax marketing company is targeting the right business audience (as a reliable company should do with its extensive database) you are sending faxes to people/companies that are more likely to adopt your services.
Stats suggest that when you target the right audience you will have a lead rate of 1 in 100; on average 1 company/person will contact you in 100 faxes sent. This equates to possible sales of your service to 200 new customers if 20,000 faxes were sent! For example your company offers `web design' and the average price for your service is £1000 (average for 20 page static site) then you have a potential 200 new business leads equating to £200,000!!! That is cost effective and efficient marketing that often brings more custom than advertising in traditional media.
Although you will receive leads the downside is that a certain percentage of those receiving your fax may complain and a very small percentage will contact you and request that they receive no more or words to that effect!
There are a many fax marketing companies on the Internet, their are only a few I would trust one of which is the company I use

SEO or search engine optimisation as it is better know can save you a lot of money if you carry it out yourself. I have wrote a number of articles on how small businesses can conduct their own optimization and acheive high rankings without spending a fortune.

What are keywords and phrases?

Keywords or phrases are what internet user's use when looking for a particular subject or website within a search engine. For example if someone types into the Google search `Harry Potter books' the search engine will show sites that match that phrase. Optimised pages will be listed above none optimised.

What is meant by an optimised page?

An page that has been optimised has been structured to rank well for a particular search phrase. Optimisation is achieved by inserting the phrase in certain areas of the HTML code and body text on a page. The optimisation process we use analyses of the front end (the areas seen by the Internet surfer) and the back end (hidden code)

What are meta tags?

Meta tags are groups of text that are not visible but are indexed by search engine spiders. These tags contain the title, description and list of relevant keywords. Once the search engines spider your site the information is used to give a site a position ar rank for a key phrase.

How can I get my site higher in a search engines?

Search engines rate the relevance of a page by its content, links and tags. The mathematical algorithm used rates the relevance of each page. When a search engine spider visits your site it looks at many aspects including page text, links and meta tags. Although the algorithm they use is a closely guarded secret, through analysis we can discover the key areas of the top 10 websites for a certain phrase, the information can then be applied to your site. Once the changes are applied you should gain a higher position in a chosen search engine.

Why should I invest in an Optimisation report?

No one can guarantee a top 10 positions, but we can give you the information to get you there. If you do not optimize the content of your website with keywords in the right positions using the right density your site will not achieve its full potential.
Examples of successful optimization using our reports can be seen by typing the following phrases into http://www.google.com - piling training or piling rigs for sale. You will notice that http://www.piling-equipment-ltd.com is within the first page for these phrases. The competition for these phrases in Google.com is 1,230,000. This position would not have been achieved without applying our optimization reports. This high position for that key phrase has increased the said company's revenue by 40 %!

How to choose the right keywords?

Selection of the right key words/phrases is critical, you must use key phrases that your customer is likely to type into a search engine to find your site. They need to be relevant to your site and targeted, for example if your site is based upon `carp fishing holidays' then that is the phrase we will run the report against. More people are using targeted phrases than ever before, some of this is due to the increasing amount of websites and competition for generic words or phrases. For example you are more likely to achieve a high position for `carp fishing holidays' than you would for the keyword `fishing' reason there are 135,000,000 to compete with - you only have 681,000 websites to compete against for `carp fishing holidays' Consequently you have a greater chance of getting on the first page for `carp fishing holidays' than for `fishing'

Is the report a `one off' or will I need more?

A one of `one off' report will assist you in achieving a high position, however in order to maintain that position or even improve upon it you should build a campaign. This is due to the changes in the way in which the search engines change their ranking programmes.

What should I do once I have adjusted my website as recommended within the report?

Once you have optimized your pages, you should submit your site to the search engines, the length of time it takes to see the results may be as much as 12 weeks. You should register your site with a minimum of the top 10 search engines as these have 90 % of traffic.

Why is my site is high in one search engine but not another?

Search engines use different criteria to gauge the site position for a search phrase. The manner in which their algorithms work is a closely guarded secret and are constantly updating their rules.

Do you recommend paying to get listed in search engines?

It is becoming more difficult to get listed in Yahoo with the free submission service and several other search engines have only paid listings. Getting listed in Yahoo and Looksmart is important as the listing will bring you custom but also is used by other search engines to rate the importance of your site.

To prove a point and demonstrate how I applied the above information to a website based
