By the way, apologies to any who think I'm overdoing it by blogging exclusively about Gaza. But as the father of a toddler, when I see pictures like this...

...I feel I have to do something to stop it, however pathetic my contribution may be on a world scale. And I harbour dark fears that this tragedy is going to spawn more tragedies that go far beyond January 2009 and far beyond Gaza.

Of course there are other tragedies. Before Christmas the Lord's Resistance Army massacred 400 in Uganda. That's awful and I condemn it unreservedly, but if the LRA sent a representative to London he would be arrested while the Israeli Ambassador is treated as an honoured guest. The USA does not arm the LRA and the EU does not trade with it. The West's backing of Israeli criminals fuels my outrage.

Finally, any who think I have been unbalanced in my comments on this war should perhaps check the casualty figures. Every death is a tragedy, but 98% of those killed have been Palestinian. That is why, while I am no supporter of Hamas or its rocket-firing activities, I overwhelmingly blame the Israeli government and its overseas backers.

Thank you for reading. Salaam. Shalom. Peace.

"Instructions:

1. Pick up the nearest book (of at least 123 pages).
2. Open the book to page 123.
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post the next three sentences.
5. Post a comment and then tag five more people."

(Isaac Asimov: The End of Eternity)

The closest book was actually a Spanish-English dictionary, but since it doesn't have full sentences I went a little farther and so you've got Isaac.

So sad. First I stumble upon the fact that the enormous vortex of plastic floating in the middle of the Pacific Ocean is worse than thought and probably impossible to fix.
Something's afoot. A whole host of BBC web pages have been incorrectly flagged as unavailable. And my clicking 'Yes: you should check again' has no effect. Check these out, then check the reviews by stumblers. (And if you look hard enough you'll find more examples than these six.)

What's going on? I've asked SU to look into this, so hopefully before long this will be fixed.

UPDATE. SU says: "the cause of this issue is down to the BBC's habit of 'redirecting' visitors to their pages to mirrors, or local versions of their pages. Thus, an article submitted by a UK member will submit a page to the SU databases. When you are served that page, as a stumble, the BBC actually delivers you another copy of it with a slightly different URL. Thus the stumble and the delivered page differ... Our members discovered, I believe, that this phenomenon is also related to cookie storage. This is a challenge for our engineers. I think they found a solution for it once, only for the BBC to change their systems."

Complicated.

Thanks to BrechinDave I found "What's your consumption factor". A bug (likely caused by the inclusion of a curly apostrophe in the web address) prevents me from thumbing it, but it's worth a look. The article suggests that consumption, not population, is the great threat to the planet. Reckon so: with people in Europe and North America consuming 32 times the average third-worlder, it's not the act of living but the way we live that is so dangerous.
