Max was my mom's cat. We got him as a kitten when he was depressed due to a recent separation from his brother. We handled him and cuddled him a lot and he turned into a real "people cat." Whenever my mom had a guest, Max would steal into the guest room and snuggle up next to the person for the night. He loved Christmas, especially the wrapping paper and tree. He was a great fan of fresh turkey. He enjoyed hanging out with his buddy Gene and until Max's final illness, the two did calisthenics together in the bedroom every morning.
Max was 17 years old. We love you Max!

Hello friends,
Since receiving a message this morning I realized that I had mistakenly not placed a public message about not stumbling during Lent. Please do not send me stumbles or messages unless they relate directly to Orthodox teachings about Lent. Bless you all...

Hello everyone,
One of my weakest areas is my ability to pull myself away from SU when I should be doing other things. So I have decided to abstain from Stumbling from Monday 2/23 until our Coptic Easter. I may visit some sites for the information, especially medically-related sites, but please try not to send me anything except prayers in your hearts.
With love,

This is one of the happiest days of my life, although I can't really celebrate openly because of the wingnuts at work. It is such a relief to have the other one out of office.
Now we can work on reestablishing peace, prosperity and moral standing in the world.
Thanks be to God, and may we have patience and humility in the coming days.

"Some would deny any legitimate use of the word God because it has been misused so much. Certainly it is the most burdened of all human words. Precisely for that reason it is the most imperishable and unavoidable. And how much weight has all erroneous talk about God's nature and works (although there never has been nor can be any such talk that is not erroneous) compared with the one truth that all men who have addressed God really meant him? For whoever pronounces the word God and really means Thou, addresses, no matter what his delusion, the true Thou of his life that cannot be restricted by any other and to whom he stands in a relationship that includes all others."
-Martin Buber, "I and Thou", 1923

Hey everyone- sorry I haven't been around. I am on an internal med rotation that is quite demanding. The other problem is that I have developed arthritis in my hands and typing hurts.
I will be back here when I have a little more time. Be blessed.

Seven uber-conservative senators are blocking a bill that could save millions of lives, and prevent millions of new malaria, TB, and HIV infections. Senate leader Harry Reid has the power to overrule these extremists, but right now he's stalling.

I signed a petition urging Sen. Reid to bring this vital bill up for a vote as soon as possible. Can you join me at the link below?

I've been trying to tone down my political expression lately because I am really tired of the polemicism and negativity in this country and I want to be part of the solution, not part of the problem. However, those feelings contribute to my enthusiasm for the best candidate for president I've seen in my lifetime, Barack Obama. I read both of his books last summer and gained respect for his intelligence, empathy and life experience. I see a consistency and integrity in the values he expresses as well as a logical progression in his actions and accomplishments. In looking at his legislative record, I see that he has put a great deal of work not only into sponsoring and supporting substantial legislation, but also into building alliances on both sides of the aisle.

Like Gore and Kerry before him, he sees complexity and subtlety in issues and events; it seems to me that people regularly push him to declare a black-or-white/with me- or against me position regarding incidents that call for a recognition of ambiguity. For example, when he addressed the Jeremiah Wright flare-up in his Philadelphia speech, he condemned the pastor's specific inflammatory remarks while affirming his close relationship and support of Rev. Wright. In addition, he discussed how his grandmother, a white woman, would clutch her purse more closely when she saw a black man coming toward her; yet he also made it clear that he had loved his grandmother dearly. Someone wise once told me that if two people agree on everything, one of them is not necessary. Healthy people can love and support others without agreeing with all of their ideas and actions. Further, I believe that a big part of maturity is the ability to expand one's concern and empathy to more and more people with respect for their differences while maintaining one's own values and sense of self. I find that as I get older, it is easier to simultaneously hold multiple, seemingly conflicting ideas in mind without feeling anxious or overwhelmed- perhaps because I realize how unimportant my opinion really is in the scheme of things?

We live in a world that is ever more complex and ever more crowded with other people who differ from us in many ways, but who share our essential humanity. Cooperation is not just for idealists; it is crucial for the survival of our planet. I feel strongly that we need to end the Us vs. Them mentality that has dominated this country recently and realize that we are all "Us" and we are all in this together. I believe Barack Obama is the leader we need at this pivotal time and I support him wholeheartedly and without reservation.
