While visiting Guatemala the usual musts include Tikal, Antigua, Lake Antilan, etc...All of these hot spots are definitely worth the trip, but for those of you who want to get off the beaten path; Check out the ruins at Yaxha, the Caribbean coast from Rio Dulce and the Pacific coast from Puerto.

Anyone in search of a cultural vacation should add Chiapas, Mexico to the list of prospective destinations. The most southern state or Mexico is not an area that can be explored quickly or in haste, yet it is a truly beautiful and diverse locations. Time should be allotted for the ruins of Palenque and surrounding nature destinations, as well as the small city that is San Cristobal de Casas. The terrain varies from mountainous to lakes and waterfalls while maintaining a cool climate. Finally the Zapatista history and presence make Chiapas a distinctly unique destination.

Mexican travel destinations can accommodate all types of traveling foodies. If you want to be wined and dined... there are restaurants that combine traditional tastes with culinary talent. If you want to get a taste of the local culture, make your way to the nearest Mercado. Most cities have at least one main central market where you can buy anything from fruit and grains to fully prepared meals ready to be eaten. If you aren't an extremist, most restaurants with a comida corrida "deal of the day" should fall somewhere in between.

It is easy to get swept away by Puerto Escondido's surf scene. The Zicatela beachfront is very set up for tourists craving relaxation and sun. Yet, if you want a glimpse into the history and center of Puerto you must do Gina's walking tour. Gina meets at her booth, located right on the Adoquin, on Saturday and Wednesday mornings and prefers to know who is coming in advance (although you can just show up). Gina tells all about the people of Puerto and how it has grown all the while walking uphill. After stopping for Ines' tamales and at a herbal pharmacy the tour ends in the Marcado Benito Juarez where Gina points out the traditional and most tasty of all the food offerings. Gina really does know what's up in Puerto, as she has been the information goddess here for more than 15 years!

Santo Domingo Cathedral is a well traveled spot in Oaxaca City and rightfully so. The cathedral is beautiful in art, architecture and...the garden. El Jardin (Garden) de Santo Domingo is fascinating and completely worth the ~$5 charge to take that walking tour. The area takes up the majority of a block and contains plants native to Mexico, most of which have medical uses. Fun fact of the day, el flor de mayo (flower of may) is one of the ingredients to Channel's famous No. 5 perfume!

NYC- Broadway on a Budget

The theater is one of NYC's truly unique attractions. For me, a trip to New York is not complete without at least one Broadway show. Attending a Broadway show can cost a pretty penny, but it doesn't have to. This NYC website is helpful in providing discount tickets; http://nytix.com/. Beyond that, it is always worth checking with the theater's ticket booth for obscured vision seats, which are usually heavily discounted and not so obscured in my experience. If both of these options fail, TKTS; http://tinyurl.com/2qjosu, a booth located directly in Times Square sells discount tickets the day of the show. TKTS only takes cash and does generally require standing in line for a bit, but the line moves fast. The theater is always worth it to me!
