I hear stagflation is upon us.
What is this?
Some sort of bachelor party? An inflation of stags?
Turns out, it's economic slow-down coupled with increase in prices.

Meanwhile, they say anti-depressants don't work.

Yes, anti-depressants don't work!

Just now, can you believe it? They say this mostly in Europe. I didn't see much coverage of this story in US. Drug companies at work?

Another event which for some reason didn't get much coverage was Roy Scheider's death.

I watched Seven-Ups again, with him and Tony LoBianco.
I still remember some scenes I watched in a movie theater in Istanbul when the film came out there.
There was much more to Scheider than that vanadium-intense look (which worked wonders in Marathon Man and Jaws, by the way.) Check out All That Jazz.

R.I.P, Roy Scheider!

These could perhaps be viewed as pieces of ars povera, as kins of "The Spiral Jetty".
The last two images are of the same hole, before and after the surrounding waters are frozen...

I just watched "The Man with a Camera" by Dziga Vertov, a film made in 1929.

I have read so much about it, I'm happy to have seen it at long last.

The most amazing thing about it for me is that it is a reflexive piece of film, almost a meta film. It incorporates the act and process of filmmaking itself. I'm sure that was truely revolutionary for its time.

I just saw Tekkonkinkreet, an anime directed by Michael Arias...

It is interesting that an American expat has been able to go as far as directing an animated feature within the Japanese film industry.

Formally, the film is very refreshing break from your usual anime with smooth, all too finished lines and doe-eyed characters: Lines are broken and angular, characters are gaunt and weathered. Everything and everyone seems to have a patina of some sort.

The story, as it is, is essentially about the bond between two boys. It is that simple, really. Yet, it is about a down and out yakuza who prefers death to bowing to changes, the changing of his city, among others, about one of the boy's (your?) alter ego who may be the last word in bad-assitude, about...

Well, some parts look and feel like an acid-trip, or rather a trip on acid cut with angle dust.

Happy Holidays, everybody!

Turkeys had their doomsday and seems like we are left to reckon with our own now!

Dollar plunging, trade deficit shrinking apparently thanks only for that, home market slumping, oil prices climbing, less and less money left for the young, the old, the unemployed and the sick, etc., etc...

7th Avenue Books has folded, too!

Anyway, never mind my "chicken-littling" here, Happy Holidays to us all!
