Dining out can be an affordable luxury for families in Springfield, Missouri

Eating out is part of American culture, but as families try to scale back on spending, they are cutting back on restaurants.

[A] place to find discounts is in the coupon books the Springfield, Missouri, Convention and Visitors Bureau gives to tourists. Locals can use them, too, says Susan Wade, public relations manager for the CVB.

"It has discounts to restaurants like Coyote's Adobe, Fuji, Hemingway's, Krispy Kreme, Tonic, Trolley's. If you don't want to come and get one you can get online and print it off at www.springfieldadventures. com," Wade says.

WOW project to take more time

Gov. Blunt Announces 2009 Missouri Arts Awards Recipients Selected

Gov. Matt Blunt today announced that the Missouri Arts Council has selected three Missourians, one art institution, one foundation and one community to receive 2009 Missouri Arts Awards, the state's highest honor in the arts.

"These award winners represent Missouri's diverse and thriving arts community and I applaud them for their dedication to advancing the arts in our state," Gov. Blunt said. "As governor, I have enjoyed promoting the work of Missouri artists and the importance of art in our state's history and culture."

The winners by category are:

Arts Education - Kansas City Art Institute, Kansas City

Arts Organization - Allied Arts Council of St. Joseph, MO, Inc., St. Joseph

Creative Community - City of Springfield, Springfield

Springfield pastor elected first VP of Missouri Baptist Convention

The Rev. John Marshall, senior pastor of Second Baptist Church in Springfield, was elected first vice president of the Missouri Baptist Convention last weekend.

Marshall, who won on the first ballot, received 426 votes, the most for any one candidate, according to The Pathway, the official news outlet of the MBC.

The Rev. Bruce McCoy, pastor of Canaan Baptist Church of St. Louis, was elected president in a four-way contest. A run-off vote was held between McCoy, who has served as MBC first vice president for the past two years, and the Rev. Danny Decker, pastor of First Baptist Church of Warsaw. McCoy received 404 votes.

The 174th annual convention met in St. Louis Oct. 27-29 with only about 1,000 voting "messengers" attending, the lowest number in more than 35 years, The Pathway reported. The theme of the event was "Restoring Fellowship ... Reaching People."
